What if...¿Cubone was not orphaned?,well he would not take the skull of his dead mother,and also become a happy pokemon instead a sad one!.I tried to imagine how cubone face looks,like many other people here,so i started with the skull as a reference(It's the mom skull,but is the closest canon thing to a ''face'') and also this image:

I made two variants,one with horn-like protrusions and another without,the mom clearly have ''horns'' but it's impossible to confirm if unmasked cubone has it or not.
The skulls in the up are from Kangaskhan and Cubone's mom(from left to right)to compare.
For these people who still believe in the theory of Cubone/Kangaskhan,look at the skulls,they don't match! also the skull of Cubone mom have two horn-like protrusions and Kangaskhan don't ,they have ears!
One theory more plausible and less popular is about Charizard being the mom based on the look of the skull,but i save that for another What If...Pokemon!

I used to think Cubone's skull looks like that of an Aerodactyl...
Anyway, my headcanon is that Cubone's nesting grounds are also their graveyards: They young are born where the old go to die, so they can always find skulls and bones to protect themselves with.

I like it!,well he has Charizard similarities too,but is clearly a different species skull,also the skull is different from Marowak,so i think these ''Olds'' are an unseen last stage evolution
