I am flattered but it almost certainly wouldn't fit anyone but for whom it was made.

what did you use to make that...it looks so real!

PerfectTommyAutomail In reply to Terradoll [2012-07-01 02:19:00 +0000 UTC]
It's mostly vacuum-formed styrene plastic, with the exception of the hand and some of the details which are made from cast urethane.

It is mostly vacuum formed styrene, with other materials (urethane foam, casting resin) used on the hand and details

how did you figure out how to fit it to your arm?!
π: 0 β©: 1
PerfectTommyAutomail In reply to CrunchyXCereal [2012-05-22 02:05:25 +0000 UTC]
That was the tricky bit for sure - For much of it I wrapped the arm in saran wrap, then wrapped over that with plaster bandages - the same ones used to make casts, only not as thick - only 2 or 3 layers. when that was hard I cut it off and had a perfect replica (though a bit rough) of the arm - only a little bit bigger, which is what I wanted. I used these pieces as the foundation for the bucks that the vacuum formed pieces were made on.

This is the best automail I've ever seen! So polished and smooth (unlike those cheap cosplay fakes) truly a work of art!
Are you by chance making more of these, because I would absolutely love to buy one from you~

PerfectTommyAutomail In reply to mini-cheesecake [2011-12-20 02:50:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for your very kind words. I'm working right now on making the glove and forearm reproducible at a reasonable cost. These could be worn with the red coat and I think be very effective. The upper arm and shoulder piece are extremely custom fit and I think would be unrealistic to make as a one-size-fits-most version. I could make custom fit pieces but it would get expensive, I'm afraid. I'll have photos & info up as soon as I'm ready with these - I'm also working on a couple other sticky projects, so nothing is getting done quickly.

No problem, you are definitely an accomplished artist!
I understand how high prices would get for the type of material, customization, etc. so I figure that I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway Still, the design and format sound amazing, and I wish you the best of luck with your work

Nicklul [2011-11-22 22:27:38 +0000 UTC]
anyway you could tell a fellow how to make one in detail?
π: 0 β©: 1
PerfectTommyAutomail In reply to Nicklul [2011-11-25 16:53:10 +0000 UTC]
Almost the entire arm with the exception of the hand was vacuum formed. Do you have access to a vacuum form machine? If not, any detailed directions I could give you would not be of any use to you.

OMG. HOW DID YOU MAKE SOMETHING SO AMAZING!! what materials did you use?
π: 0 β©: 1
PerfectTommyAutomail In reply to Ed-Elric-Fan-x [2011-11-16 19:07:46 +0000 UTC]
Hi - The majority of this ( shoulder, forearm, upper arm) was made of custom-fit vacuum formed styrene plastic formed over bucks made of wood. The hand and fingers were made mostly of cast urethane ( a 2-part liquid plastic). using these materials allowed me to keep the parts very thin for a custom-fit look yet still be strong enough to hold up to a full weekend Con. Thanks for your interest. I'd be glad to answer any more specific questions you had about these.

How long would it taketo make the whole arm? And does it get expensive?
π: 0 β©: 1
PerfectTommyAutomail In reply to Ed-Elric-Fan-x [2011-11-19 04:10:47 +0000 UTC]
Well, it took me several months part-time to make the one in the photos. The real problem in making these for others, though, is in the fitting. This is custom fit to an extreme measure, so that it looks like a prosthetic arm, not armor worn on an arm. So to make another custom fit piece would get into some serious money, I'm afraid. Do not despair, though - I am right now working on replicating the hand and forearm so that they can be reasonably priced. Even though it's not the entire automail prosthetic, if worn under the correct outfit, I think it would be very impressive. I'll have photos and more info up on this within the next two weeks. I am humbled that you are interested in my work. Thank you.
