Description JB (for Jelly Bean). 12 years. About 10kg (22 pounds). Female ♀

Alternate title 1: "Hot Air Balloon at this year's Christmas Parade" ... inspired by

Alternate title 2: "Let me give you a B-I-G hug!" ... contributed by

Alternate title 3: "No, no, NO ... that's NOT a toilet-roll!!" ... inspired by

Alternate title 4: "I Love You Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis Much." ... contributed by

In answer to 's question "What is she doing?" --- "... the title was inspired by my little niece's expression during meditation classes. The little girl liked to do as the adults did, and would get involved in the classes. She would scrunge her face in concentration, much like the way JB is doing here. And the way JB is holding out her arms and her right leg in this pic, I thought she looked like she was trying to meditate and levitate!

"... but the truth is, she was actually doing a stretch (in the middle of her sleep), and this shot was taken at the very end of that very full stretch!"

thought JB might be with little kittehs because of her size, and I told him ---
" ... ahhh ... no, no, that ain't possible ... JB's spayed ... no little helium ballloons levitating all over the place ... omg, can you just imagine that vision?!! "

JB loves sleeping on the bed. So when she became the blimp, we had a wooden ramp built for her to access her fave spot on the bed. On weekends, when the sheets are changed, the ramp is moved away from the edge of the bed so that she won't be able to get onto the bed and be in the way. Some weeks after the introduction of the ramp, we found her on the bed on sheet-change-day. We questioned her on this apparent teleportation, but she wasn't telling.

One day, she was caught in the act. She sat on her haunches, staring intently at the bed for a long time ... calculating distance, weight, and force required for lift-off.
The blimp is no wimp.Β She's fat but strong, and if I'm on a swivel-chair when she bunts, I actually do swivel some! ... nobody bunts like JB bunts!
When her weight starting going up quickly a couple of years ago, we thought she was greedy and eating up other cats' share of food. So we separated her from the others to better control her food intake - we put her on a special diet for obese cats, and the quantities were carefully calculated and measured out. Still the weight climbed up.

We brought her in to the vet to test for hypo-thyroid - results were negative. Because of her weight and her age, the vet was concerned about diabetes and the condition of her liver and kidneys - but blood tests results all came back normal. In fact, her readings were better than most cats her age! The vet suspects it is a hormonal problem, but there's nothing that can be done. So all we can do is continue to control her diet, and pray that her heart and lungs and bone joints can hold up to all that weight.

Up until two years ago, when she was already 10 years, she was lithesome and strong and fast. And she was always in the pink of health, never a sick day in her life. It makes us wanna cry, to see her like this. Fortunately, she is a very contented cat. She is still active, and full of curiousity and life ... for that, we are grateful.

Here's a pic of JB in her younger, and lighter, days ...

Death is part of Life; the sad is part of the same story of the happy.
It never gets easier, these goodbyes ... but we have to be strong for them, and we have to apply what we learned from caring for one, for the benefit of the others left behind, and the others still to come. I feel we have to do that, in order that those who have gone, have not died in vain, that their lives had taught us something.

I am glad! IΒ met a lady who had a beloved kitty for many years ... and when her kitty died, she was so heartbroken that she swore never to have another cat as she couldn't bear the thought of going through that loss again. I thought that was so sad ... some kitties somewhere in this world are being deprived of a loving home and a loving human, all because of her unreasoning fear of loss. It is better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all.

Β  Wow. That is sad... I know that when my two kitties pass away, which will hopefully not happen until 2020 or something, I will be glad to accept a new kitty into my house. And I have a little rule: never buy. There are so many little kittens out on the street or in shelters that when you buy a kitten from a store you're basically depriving that poor little kitten a warm home.

I am so totally with you on that one - all of ours (kitties, bunnies, and even one chinchilla)Β were rescued strays/ferals, or those abused or neglected by previous humans, abandoned or given up by their owners or their stray-cat-mummies, or those that simply wandered into our home and stayed. ^^

Zeppelin.

Poor cat, she must eat a lot and practicing very little outdoor exercises. I fear this is because of the hormones-full food, which in time (possibly meaning in a very short time, if she's 12 yo) will damage her, either directly or indirectly. I had a cat killed by diabete, another by cancer, and this is because of the shitty food in bright coloured boxes. They both were in good health (the one who died from cancer being overweighted), yet none reached the age of 12. The best alternative remains natural food, remains from animals and, of course, mices/rats/birds/insects.
Stranhe though... I have a cat who's 21 soon, and she's eating a lot ! Β A lot of this coloured food in shiny boxes, and never a disease. Nothing severe, at least. And never grew fat, even if she eats like two ! Maybe it's the race, afterall, (she's Angora), as well as every cat individual's luck.

Good luck with yours !

Actually, you know, she didn't eat a lot ... and up until she was 10 years old, she was slender and very very active, and never fell sick. There were no changes to her diet up toΒ that point. The vets couldn't help, changes in diet didn't help, nothing helped.

And as you can see from the description, she was slender for ten years of her life. The sudden and relentless weight gain, despite a very controlled diet, was probably due to some hormonal imbalance, the vets think.
