Description JB (for Jelly Bean). 12 years. About 10kg (22 pounds). Female ♀

Alternate title 1: "Hot Air Balloon at this year's Christmas Parade" ... inspired by

Alternate title 2: "Let me give you a B-I-G hug!" ... contributed by

Alternate title 3: "No, no, NO ... that's NOT a toilet-roll!!" ... inspired by

Alternate title 4: "I Love You Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis Much." ... contributed by

In answer to 's question "What is she doing?" --- "... the title was inspired by my little niece's expression during meditation classes. The little girl liked to do as the adults did, and would get involved in the classes. She would scrunge her face in concentration, much like the way JB is doing here. And the way JB is holding out her arms and her right leg in this pic, I thought she looked like she was trying to meditate and levitate!

"... but the truth is, she was actually doing a stretch (in the middle of her sleep), and this shot was taken at the very end of that very full stretch!"

thought JB might be with little kittehs because of her size, and I told him ---
" ... ahhh ... no, no, that ain't possible ... JB's spayed ... no little helium ballloons levitating all over the place ... omg, can you just imagine that vision?!! "

JB loves sleeping on the bed. So when she became the blimp, we had a wooden ramp built for her to access her fave spot on the bed. On weekends, when the sheets are changed, the ramp is moved away from the edge of the bed so that she won't be able to get onto the bed and be in the way. Some weeks after the introduction of the ramp, we found her on the bed on sheet-change-day. We questioned her on this apparent teleportation, but she wasn't telling.

One day, she was caught in the act. She sat on her haunches, staring intently at the bed for a long time ... calculating distance, weight, and force required for lift-off.
The blimp is no wimp. She's fat but strong, and if I'm on a swivel-chair when she bunts, I actually do swivel some! ... nobody bunts like JB bunts!
When her weight starting going up quickly a couple of years ago, we thought she was greedy and eating up other cats' share of food. So we separated her from the others to better control her food intake - we put her on a special diet for obese cats, and the quantities were carefully calculated and measured out. Still the weight climbed up.

We brought her in to the vet to test for hypo-thyroid - results were negative. Because of her weight and her age, the vet was concerned about diabetes and the condition of her liver and kidneys - but blood tests results all came back normal. In fact, her readings were better than most cats her age! The vet suspects it is a hormonal problem, but there's nothing that can be done. So all we can do is continue to control her diet, and pray that her heart and lungs and bone joints can hold up to all that weight.

Up until two years ago, when she was already 10 years, she was lithesome and strong and fast. And she was always in the pink of health, never a sick day in her life. It makes us wanna cry, to see her like this. Fortunately, she is a very contented cat. She is still active, and full of curiousity and life ... for that, we are grateful.

Here's a pic of JB in her younger, and lighter, days ...

My sister's cat is a heavy boy, and they give him less than the recommended amount of food, but still he kept growing. So what they did is they got a bowl that forces a cat to eat more slowly. It looks like bunt pan, but smaller. When he had to work harder for his food, which was very little, he slowed down and started losing weight. He's dropped from 20 lbs (he weighed that much when they adopted him) to 15 over the course of the last couple years. Still a big boy, but he's shedding them like cat hair in the hot summers. They also got a cat tree and put it in front of a window, then put a bird feeder in front of it. Very active kitty now!

Apologies for the late reply ... and thanks for sharing your sister's experience with an overweight cat. A catbook we read advise us to use a very large plate to slow down the cat's eating speed ... but no effect on her weight.

It's been two years since this pic was uploaded to dA, and she's still huge, though her weight has come down a few pounds, to 8.6kg (19 lbs) She no longer gobbles her food ... maybe the herbal remedies we tried are finally taking effect. She's still reasonably active, and likes going out to the garden occasionally. And she can still put up a mighty fight when we have to wash her bottom if it gets soiled! (I have scars to show for it!)

She's 14 now, and whether it's age or weight, she's having some problem with bowel movement ... so we have to give her daily doses of lactulose, and watch her litter tray with eagle-eyes, recording each and every precious poo! ^^

How old is your sister's cat?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosFay In reply to pergamjee [2012-08-18 06:22:55 +0000 UTC]

I think he's 4 or 5. Not sure. My own cats, 3 and 5, have been staying slim due to the fact they're constantly chasing the birds in front the windows...and each other. Cacoa, our older cat, was starting to put on weight so we got her a kitten when she was 3. Jasper, now 3, was 8 weeks old at 2 lbs when we adopted him (the runt). She shed the weight fast and since then both are in good shape.

It was our vet that recommended the kitten. My sister and her husband are considering a kitten to get their cat moving.

Ahhhh ... a new addition can be good or bad ... cats have their own personalities too; they can become fast friends, or sometimes, they just don't like each other! We have had both kinds of experiences ...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosFay In reply to pergamjee [2012-08-18 07:50:15 +0000 UTC]

Cacoa loved Jasper for awhile, then he discovered she has no front claws and he does. After he got bigger than her he turned into a bully. But turns out she starts most of the fights. Kind of funny. We have a water bottle waiting for them when they get into a loud non-friendly wrestling match. Cacoa, being black, sulks in the shadows until Jasper comes around and then simple walks out of the shadows and he slowly poofs. He is a full blown coward and very jumpy.

We won't be bringing in anymore kittens until we move, though. That way no one has a claim on a territory.
