Description JB (for Jelly Bean). 12 years. About 10kg (22 pounds). Female ♀

Alternate title 1: "Hot Air Balloon at this year's Christmas Parade" ... inspired by

Alternate title 2: "Let me give you a B-I-G hug!" ... contributed by

Alternate title 3: "No, no, NO ... that's NOT a toilet-roll!!" ... inspired by

Alternate title 4: "I Love You Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis Much." ... contributed by

In answer to 's question "What is she doing?" --- "... the title was inspired by my little niece's expression during meditation classes. The little girl liked to do as the adults did, and would get involved in the classes. She would scrunge her face in concentration, much like the way JB is doing here. And the way JB is holding out her arms and her right leg in this pic, I thought she looked like she was trying to meditate and levitate!

"... but the truth is, she was actually doing a stretch (in the middle of her sleep), and this shot was taken at the very end of that very full stretch!"

thought JB might be with little kittehs because of her size, and I told him ---
" ... ahhh ... no, no, that ain't possible ... JB's spayed ... no little helium ballloons levitating all over the place ... omg, can you just imagine that vision?!! "

JB loves sleeping on the bed. So when she became the blimp, we had a wooden ramp built for her to access her fave spot on the bed. On weekends, when the sheets are changed, the ramp is moved away from the edge of the bed so that she won't be able to get onto the bed and be in the way. Some weeks after the introduction of the ramp, we found her on the bed on sheet-change-day. We questioned her on this apparent teleportation, but she wasn't telling.

One day, she was caught in the act. She sat on her haunches, staring intently at the bed for a long time ... calculating distance, weight, and force required for lift-off.
The blimp is no wimp.Β She's fat but strong, and if I'm on a swivel-chair when she bunts, I actually do swivel some! ... nobody bunts like JB bunts!
When her weight starting going up quickly a couple of years ago, we thought she was greedy and eating up other cats' share of food. So we separated her from the others to better control her food intake - we put her on a special diet for obese cats, and the quantities were carefully calculated and measured out. Still the weight climbed up.

We brought her in to the vet to test for hypo-thyroid - results were negative. Because of her weight and her age, the vet was concerned about diabetes and the condition of her liver and kidneys - but blood tests results all came back normal. In fact, her readings were better than most cats her age! The vet suspects it is a hormonal problem, but there's nothing that can be done. So all we can do is continue to control her diet, and pray that her heart and lungs and bone joints can hold up to all that weight.

Up until two years ago, when she was already 10 years, she was lithesome and strong and fast. And she was always in the pink of health, never a sick day in her life. It makes us wanna cry, to see her like this. Fortunately, she is a very contented cat. She is still active, and full of curiousity and life ... for that, we are grateful.

Here's a pic of JB in her younger, and lighter, days ...

Like on night sitting around having a few drinks (many years ago).
The subject of HOW it is done came up. Some farm animals have rubber bands placed around the certain body part, and it cuts the blood supply off and then after some time they fall off!

When asked, 'Why isn't that done with male cats?'
Without thinking I said: 'Because we'd have small furry balls all over the place since cats roam.'

A moments silence followed by everyone almost crying with laughter
Funny, but true
That and a cat would pull the band off.
Or attack anyone who came near :/

Have you tried one of the high protein cat foods like Innova Evo or Royal Canin 40? That might do better.

You might try the Evo as it is 50% protein and less carbs.

pergamjee In reply to RooCat [2010-12-27 15:29:04 +0000 UTC]

The vets say it's hormonal, but can't seem to do anything about it. I'm willing to try a remedy that may help with her hormones but I don't think it's the food intake that's the problem. I shall let it be as she's had had to give up a lot of stuff she likes already, and her weight is still going up. We are using an extract from a cacti plant that suppresses appetite - it isn't making her any lighter, but at least she isn't all stressed-out and prowling for food instead of sleeping.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RooCat In reply to pergamjee [2010-12-28 02:54:26 +0000 UTC]

I assume she is spayed, yes? You might try Solaray Female Hormone Blend SP-7C which really balances all the hormones for menopausal animals (including humans) since spaying is similar to menopause in its effects on the body - mechanical menopause. The dose would be 1-2 a day. Or you could try Solaray Metabolic SP-18 which supports all the hormone systems regardless of sex and helps the heart, thyroid, cleans the blood, and tends to promote weight loss caused by metabolic imbalances. It also soothes and promotes tone. Just a few thoughts.

pergamjee In reply to RooCat [2010-12-28 05:42:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, she's spayed. All our cats are desexed, as the Americans call it.
I know this brand of vitamins and supplements. The little organic place I go to every fortnight carries it - although I don't know how extensive/full their range is. I will go there tomorrow to check if they have the two you mentioned - I've already noted the names in my cellphone. Anyway, I know who the distributor in Singapore is, so if I can't find the two, I can approach the distributor and see if they have them, or if they can order for me.

Ooohhh, I'm so filled with hope! I could so kiss you, you know!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RooCat In reply to pergamjee [2010-12-28 16:20:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, some Americans might call it that but most animal people use neutered for both sexes rather than desexed or spayed (female) or neutered (male).

The dose on the SP18 would be the same as for the SP7C. If neither is effective on their own, I would try a little of both. Or you could just start with both as they won't hurt her. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and her!

Just came back from the organic place. My mistake, they carry Solgar, not Solaray. Searched the net. Most sites do USA shipments only, no international. I have account at iHerb and they have Solaray products, but the Female Hormone SP7C is out-of-stock as is the Respiration SP7. They don't have the Metabolic SP18 nor the Kidney SP6. Ordered the CoQ10 already.
VitaminLife carries very limted range of Solaray and not these ones. Sigh...I am still searching the net...

The 2 orders I put in at the 2 sites will take between 4 days and 25 days to arrive. I'm praying my cats will hold out till then.

yes...i just normally say they are passed out somewhere. they really dont budge much whenever you poke them to wake them...the only time they spring up is when the food hits their dish. thats the only time. other then that, they're like dead to the world. and i have 6 loveable darlings. and one dog poorbaby though she stays outside...
ah we only have a wood stove, but its so peaceful (when the wind dosent blow the smoke back in) to sit hear and listen to the roaring flames....ahh so peaceful and beautiful. and very HOT!!! my dad cooks us half to death

OH my goodness!!! hot tropics!!! i am not too good with the heat. i would move to Alaska one day if i could afford it. i prefer the cold mostly. sure i hate freezing but i can put on even more layers and sit by the woodstove and roast myself. but when its hot you can only take off so much.

aww that was really pretty!!!! nicely done. HAPPY HOLIDAYS DEAR!!!

ahhh...you are too kind...chubby is too cute a word for her condition...she is grossly overweight. When her weight starting going up quickly a couple of years ago, we thought she was greedy and eating up other cats' share of food. So we separated her from the others to better control her food intake - we put her on a special diet for obese cats, and the quantities were carefully calculated and measured out. hahaha...belly-rubbing is soooo not recommended for this cat, if you value your hands. She has her good points, but she also has her bad points - all 18 of them! - and her sharp teeth too! Clipping her claws always end up a bloodied affair - and the blood's all mine!

Awww, I'm sorry to hear that! I've heard of a lot of cat suffering from the same condition without any specific reason. I think there's a cat named Mopar who sounds exactly like your cat. Thankfully, my cat is only just greedy and that can be controlled. Still, I hope the best for your dear kitty!

Oh, dear. That, my friend, is the reason I had my Prowl kitty's front paws declawed. That and we didn't wish to have shredded leather furniture. And legs...and other body parts. Heck, that belly is just too cute not to rub! I don't care if I would lose a few fingers! XD
