Description The calico sisters (from left) Muttface (12 months), Copy (7 months), and Saddles (4 months).

As you can see, we were unsuccessful in our attempts to trap their stray-cat-mum to send in for neutering.

They're all beautiful. The one on the left, Muttface, looks like she has Siamese in her. Reminds me of a cat I had as a child. Her name was Callie (I didn't know what to name her. ) and had a similar coloration and everything.

Thank you. hmmm ... not sure about the Siamese ... many of our local cats have this marking, which is not so much like the points of a Siamese as like dirty smudges! ... you can see these smudges clearer here ... [link] in ginger ... and here ... [link] in grey/black.

This coloration is one of my favourites. Callie is a good name ... short for calico! ^^

You're welcome! Her nose looks a lot like the points. It's very pretty though.

Yeah, when I was little, I called all calicos Callie because I guess I couldn't say it, so when I got her, she immediately was named that.

3 of our 5 cats are siblings. One of them is a calico. They ALL fear the calico. She's a sweetie though...at least when she's not calicoey.

Calico coat colouring is one of my faves! Although, I didn't "select" these cats because of their coat colour! they were just some of the many that their stray-cat-mum gave birth to on our roof and then abandoned over a period of two years.
Thanks for stopping to comment!

Ahhh ... she bites? acts crazed? we had one like that too! If you think about it seriously, it's kindna silly ... us hulking humans, terrified of baby claws and teeth!!! We used to throw a towelling dishcloth at her to distract her when she was in one of her "moods", then run like hell away! Here's a pic of our baby terrorist ... [link]

These sisters? Nahhhh ... in fact, these siblings are quite close. Some of our cats don't get along ... then we have to keep them separate in different "kingdoms", each kingdom comprising one room in the house, opening into a secured section of the garden, so that each group of cats can have free-access to both indoor and outdoor.

Emeowrald In reply to pergamjee [2011-06-14 05:47:49 +0000 UTC]

"Kingdoms"?
Wow. Sounds like you have an entire cat empire at your house. How many cats do you have may I ask?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pergamjee In reply to Emeowrald [2011-06-14 07:22:59 +0000 UTC]

lol... at the moment, the cat population stands at 17; about ten years ago, it reached the high of 36 cats! Then, of course, old age and natural attrition ... so we lost 19 cats in the last decade, including 6 in 2010. In that time, we have had two rabbits and one chinchilla ... all dead now. Our little people were all strays, rescued or abandoned/given-up by their previous owners for whatever reasons.

Our 17 cats now range in age from 12 to 20 years old. Our youngest, eight-year-old Snowball, died recently ... his story is told here [link]

Awww. I'm sorry about Snowball. He looked like a beautiful cat.

Is there a difference between a manx and a snub-tail cat?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pergamjee In reply to Emeowrald [2011-06-15 08:17:08 +0000 UTC]

No difference as far as I know. The Manx cat is so named because it originates on the Isle of Man. Tail-less cats were common on that island as far back as 300 years ago. It is due to a naturally occurring genetic mutation that caused the spine/tail to deform. Here, most of the stray street cats also show the same deformity. I am guessing that the fact that we are also an island-nation has something to do with that.

Manx cats are classified as ...
Rumpy - no tail whatsoever
Riser - stub of cartilage or several vertebrae under the fur, most noticeable when kitten is happy and raising its 'tail'
Stumpy - partial tail, more than a 'riser' but less than 'tailed' (in rare cases kittens are born with kinked tails because of incomplete growth of the tail during development)
Stubby - half tail, or short tail.
Tailed or Longy - complete or near complete tail

Just so you know, I'm not a supporter of the breeding industry.

Emeowrald In reply to pergamjee [2011-06-16 04:15:14 +0000 UTC]

I've only met one manx cat in my life so far.

If the cat breeding industry is at all like the dog breeding industry than I don't blame you.
I saw a documentry on how dog owners actually participate in inbreeding which causes the dogs to have severe health issues.

Yup, same evils. But dogs have it worse, simply because they have been domesticated for many more hundreds of years.

Heard that Siamese are highly intelligent cats.

RainySkyz In reply to pergamjee [2011-03-18 05:33:55 +0000 UTC]

lol

Well, as to Siamese being highly intelligent cats. I've raised quite a few breeds, and 3 Siamese, and though my first Siamese was very intelligent and very human and like a first human baby to me, my last cat (Umber whom I've spoken many times) was just a feral female kitten when I took her in, and she was the most intelligent and compassionate and human of all 18. So I dunno. As with humans, seems each cat can range from any level of i.q. or personality. Even cats that are taken in as kittens and raised with love, can still be argumentative and aloof, whereas adopting a full grown cat that maybe was abused, could turn out to be very loving. Really not sure how all this works. I just know there is great diversity. But overall, the Siamese breed is intelligent -- and territorial/protective -- was how they were bred to be. I love their looks (especially the ones that have the larger heads, and not the wedge heads with skinny bodies.) But I love all breeds of cats, except not too much the pug noses, just doesn't look healthy, and I know they have problems breathing.
