Description
I tried to make this critter once already, back in 2013. (With new material being described and published in 2015 which I didn't have access to back then). For whatever reason, I've done some strange things with the crease pattern, resulting in the third to last pair of legs being unreasonably thick on the folded model.
even though this crease pattern is plain boxpleating, I decided to color code it to show what part is where on the stick figure, because the total number of flaps is quite high.
I've had some doubts about the anatomy of the creature due to previous depictions being inconsistent with one another. Not just in details, even in important features like the number of limbs and spines.
Because of this I've actually ended up asking palaeontologists for advice so that I could make this model as accurate as I can while keeping the complexity down at a manageable level.
I have solved the thick leg issue, none of the legs have an obscene amount of unnecessary pleats going through them any more.
I have also learned that my previous attempt had an extra pair of legs, but the real thing had three pairs of long mouth tentacles, so the first pair of "legs" is going to be repurposed as a pair of these tentacles in this one, with the remaining two pairs and the long head section being further ahead still, lining the top edge of the square.
I tried to arrange the flaps so that all the spines are fully in the interior of the square with the legs at the edges and I was mostly successful. only one pair of legs had to be placed in the interior of the square, which I think is not too bad still. this interior pair of legs is still going to be less than half as thick as the thickest pair of legs on the previous version and most of the other legs are going to be more or less uniform in thickness.
I am considering adding claws to the legs in the final shaping stage, but that is not easily possible at present. I might need to make some slight adjustments to the crease pattern to rectify that, but for all intents and purposes I consider this crease pattern finished enough to be sharing-worthy.
