Description i've now officially spent more time playing with lighting and materials settings than i did in actually building the car. my goal is to find a way to live with the basic maya hardware renderer, which to put it bluntly, sucks. this image took about a minute to render out

for some reason the version of mental ray that came bundled with maya doesn't want to work. as for pointers, i usually poly model using planes. i'll start with a sketch (or occasionally a blueprint) then draw a simple silhouette with the create poly tool. then it's just a lot of tedious work of dividing that first poly with the split poly tool and stretching it into a shape i like. once its in a basic shape i'll use the smooth poly tool to add some more geometry to try to refine the shape. after i'm pretty happy with the surface work i'll start extracting pieces like the hood and doors in order to add the cut lines. lastly i'll add the trim pieces, moldings mirrors and the like. that's how i do it. however, i've experimented with nurbs and sub-ds as well and they have they're uses. the way i do things requires a lot of grunt work in order to build a shape and it doesn't always result in a clean mesh. also i have to keep a constant eye on my normals since splitting polys can cause a lot of funky planes and smoothing errors. but it works for me

Darn nice render. Looks slightly cel shaded - perhaps alittle more reflection?

Nice modeling! You did a great job on the lighting too without a 3rd party plugin. I don't know how maya's default renderer is since i use 3dsMax, but looks pretty good to me. Would look awesome with Brazil or VRay Renderer. Keep up the good work, i love the cars you choose to model.
