I say keep testing until you can find a lighting style that you're the most comfortable with or one that works well with animation. Or your own animation style.

This artwork is fairly decent. The style is unique and coloring is solid. But it could use a few tweaks to make it much better
The red shading could be darker to make it more noticeable
The nose is weird... it's a like a triangle. It doesn't really look all too good. Plus you left a red spot on the nose that is probably an error
The mouth seems too low. If you look at... pretty much any canine their snout has a fair amount of distance between the bottom of it and the mouth. It might be a stylistic choice but an odd one at that.
Could use some texture. Select the red/white fur parts, paint over with a fur brush and overlay it to give it more depth. You might have to correct colors but overall that's it.
The light is blended, but the shading could use some blending. I blur it, but if you need to make it darker and try not to get it outside the boundaries.
Where's the light coming from?! It looks like it's behind him but it looks like it's from the left.

Listen, I know I'm not that good either, but if you really wanna improve, take advice from your peers. Lemme tell you someone being honest like this is far more helpful than "yeah it's good..."

it doesn't matter if it's a cartoon or not. the artist was trying to do something; they did it wrong, so this person with more experience pointed out errors so that the artist can get it right.
