Description
You think that I know what I do;that I belong to myself for one or even half a breath?
As little as a feather knows what it writes;
as little as a ball can guess where next it flies.

I've always enjoyed painting borders for my watercolors. The Sufi inspired
mandalas allowed me to paint borders inside borders. Most enjoyable

Oh gosh! And I love BLUE! Esp. when complemented with orange!
Everytime I see Celtic Knots, I feel like coloring them myself!
I can tell you had fun with this one as well!
Love your transparencies. They're simple but there's alot of depth to them.
I think what catches my eye most about your work are the interesting designs you come up with for your borders! It's meticulous yet wild. Love that! That's the thing with your work...it's messy but clean! Which makes it extremely interesting!

messy but clean That made me laugh, Maritza. One of my favorite
things in the world to do is to come up with a design interesting enough to
get a little crazy with when it comes time to paint. It makes me very glad
to know someone else gets the humor. You are very sweet.

Honestly, I didn't know how else to describe it!
When I am planning to paint, I tend to make the preliminary drawings very simple. I always try to get the lines right. This is when I'm doing a watercolor. Now, if it's an acrylic or oil painting (haven't worked in oils in ages, needs ventilation), that's different you can correct the lines right on the canvas if it doesn't look right.
I tend to make the drawing very simple but when I paint, that's when I get crazy. I love to get wild with colors and designs. Painting is ALWAYS my favorite part of the process. I can be me.
Definitely, you'll love watercolor pencil and watercolor crayons.
What you wrote to me in the PM I really enjoyed your story.
Which I have to still have to sit down and answer to because honestly, it's really interesting what you told me.

You weren't too far off in that assessment and that's why I smiled.
For a long time I made very careful plans when I painted something and I always made sure the under-drawings were as good as could be. Then I erased most of the pencil lines. I've become much more loose in my work this past decade or more. Sometimes the effects are fine but, if not, there's always something interesting and there's always the next image too. I used to show stuff in galleries but gave that up in the mid-90s because it was too much pressure. The day job provided a living.
I never used oils because when I was young I'd have an asthma attack if I was in a room with solvents. That may not still be true, but that's a whole other and very different skill to learn. I will, however, get some watercolor pencils and maybe some crayons too. On your recommendation, of course..

I think it looks like the first ray of sunshine flickering through the window to illuminate a mosaicked floor... really pretty I love the colours.

I'm very flattered you chose it. Your post about mandalas is very sensitively written.

I agree with coastbeachartist your borders amplify the main body of your work - much like the
The Story-telling Voice
– The primary story is occasionally interrupted by side stories that help clarify a point being made in the original statement. Rumi sometimes takes hundreds of lines to make a point because he is constantly interrupting himself.
As always - I could roam in your boarders forever

Yes, Rumi was a magnificent poet, philosopher, and storyteller. He always got to the point eventually too
I have roamed my borders what seemed like forever - took a while to find my way back on occasion

It just dawns upon me that while I love the bright watercolors in your fine artwork, it is the borders in all your works that so compliment the main body of work. There is such a synergetic wondrous strength with the two together.
Susan, you truly are an inspiration to artists and viewers alike.
Kindly,
Grant

Thanks, Grant. For many years my primary reason for painting is that the process allows (almost forces) me to stabilize a focus. It's much like meditation, in fact. Envisioning borders to suit the main piece has always been the most enjoyable part.
I really do appreciate your intuitive response.
Best wishes,
Susan
