Description I am trying to up the quality of my work, and would like some constructive critique. I am having scary colour management issues but once those are sorted I am determined to strive to produce better photographs in all mediums.

Colour management is both easy and hard.

I like how you used the lighting in this one. the colour looks fine to me.

I don't see anything wrong with it
I think the exposure is pretty good and I like how you can see the yellow & green from the centre of the daisy. The lighting is really nice with the way it fades into darkness towards the back.

I agree with what I've read. Lovely as is. How did you do it? I'm assuming the black sweater is gone, I recognize a spotlight, yes? what are the flowers on?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

photonig In reply to 91stang [2007-04-03 15:16:36 +0000 UTC]

The flowers are in a vase, but with a powerful tungsten spot overhead, and a short exposure, they are blacked out. I actually did this against a wall, but I underexposed so much that it is black.

91stang In reply to photonig [2007-04-03 22:23:10 +0000 UTC]

the white is still harsh, but I like it.

photonig In reply to 91stang [2007-04-06 19:16:58 +0000 UTC]

It probably is harsh, but I am having real contrast probs with my monitor, so I probably don't see what you see. It is crap when it comes to printing. Might get a new laptop.....I wish!!

Baculus-Rising [2007-04-01 11:17:12 +0000 UTC]

You can really tell your working harder on these images. The focus through out is excellent. Nothing is blurred, but the focus drops in sharpness away from where the light is hitting the front flower. I'm liking this one a lot Nigel.

Have you ever considered allowing more negative space. I wonder how it would look with more black above it as the light from above would give the negative space some interest. Just an idea though

photonig In reply to Baculus-Rising [2007-04-01 17:06:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for taking time to comment, Pete. Yes I am trying harder, and trying to ensure my focus and exposure is spot on and keeping post shooting corruption down to a minimum.
I took lots of this composition and this was the best of the bunch. There was more negative space on the original, but I cropped it a bit. Praps I might look at one of the portrait format that I took with the same settings. Lots of black on those. I went through a spell of using lots of negative space, but thought my shots were getting a bit samey. Thanks a lot again. This is the kind of stuff I was hoping for.

Baculus-Rising In reply to photonig [2007-04-01 17:34:48 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about things fetting samey, but your always changing your compositions and lighting.

I'm not sure the negative space thing will work as you might not like how it takes the attention away from the flowers. But it seems an interesting thing to try.

I shot a Pineapple (Obviously photographed and not blew it away with a shotgun) and lit it from above with loads of space above it. But I'm not sure how it works really. Part of me thinks it's just a photo of a Pineapple and another part of me thinks it's really good. I might load it up to scraps and get you to give me your thoughts on it.
