Description Here's a rare one. I kinda like it but it's tainted for me as well. When I first showed it around, somebody once again made the unfortunate comparrison to the obscure ( but not obscure ENOUGH ) 80s movie " Rock And Rule ". Every so often, I hafta endure the old " your characters remind me of this movie.. " and then I cut in and say " I know. I know. Rock and Rule " . It's either that or " Hepcats ". Bleah.

I think Amber has on blue eyeshadow though. Yum.

No problem, I just like it overall but its nice to know you like it too, after all the artists can quite often be the toughest critique

I love this picture - Amber looks SO pretty. And Aw, Ralph! What's the story with these two? I feel I must know!
Also: Amber reminds me a little of Janice, one of my faaavourite Muppets. heh. Loveliness.

Interesting that this pic should come to some one's attention today as I thought of it earlier. I'm still keeping kinda hush-hush about their story right now. I've got plans for them & stuff.

Could you recommend anything to...i don't know, keep the flame alive regarding art? I tend to be drawing more for other people these days and not for myself or of my characters (Sorry to bug you!)

Phraggle In reply to antlercat-anon [2009-02-26 00:59:47 +0000 UTC]

Drawing for other people can get overwhelming if one isn't careful. I had that problem when I first started posting on line. Keeping the flame alive? That can be tricky. I know that finding a way to feel happy helps As weird as that may sound, it is true. When you feel good, life reflects that back to you in all ways possible. I try to think about and look at stuff that I like and not do anything until the feeling strikes me. But that's just me. I do bring my sketchbook with me to work to just doodle in. It may be why I fill them up so fast.

Aww, thanks for the tips! Maybe I need to start taking a sketchbook out with me - I never do! I appreciate your help a lot!
I'd love to draw Ralph for you one day (haha, after bitching about drawing for others! ) because he's a sweetie. Would you mind if I drew one of my characters as someone of Ralph's "species" too, or...?

I'm sorry to hear that your image was tainted by someone's comment about a movie comparison. It's really frustrating, trying to insist that you created this on your own independently from a movie right? Expecially if a lot of people are doing so.

I get that a lot about my insect drawings and it's not funny. In fact I get it with just about every one of my drawings at some time or another. I got so sick of it I actually posted a rule in my DA journal no comments about Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks and to read my journal. I created my characters at least two or three years before the movie. It'as frustrating and discouraging.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phraggle In reply to Butterflyhornet [2005-04-06 23:56:23 +0000 UTC]

That sort of thing doesn't bother me as much as it once did. For one thing, it's probably impossible to actually create something completely never-before-seen. Everything has bits of something from it. If people could create brand new concepts, they'd need to have God-like abilities. One thing about people comparing my art to other things is that it pushes me to try and make my stuff as umm... " my own " as I can.

I like your characters. I don't see many folks who draw insects so that's pretty cool.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Butterflyhornet In reply to Phraggle [2005-04-07 03:13:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

I think it just may because I draw antro-like insects and many people associate antro-like creatures or biped animals with Disney/Dreamworks. And because they did a movie with insect characters, then any sort of cartoony human like insect gets the label. I notice it with people who draw cartoony lions as well. Kind of funny how people are.

Hm...I'm always reminded of those old kick-ass 70's storybook illustrations when I see your art. And some characters remind me of Jim Henson stuff...but...you know.

Regarding the pic though, *lovely*. Looks like the shot on the back of the comic or DVD that showcases the main characters. That's a good thing btw. Love the looks on their faces...AMber especially!

He owns it? I saw it once on HBO at like 4:30 in the morning waaaaay back in the summer of 1986 I think. I was all excited about it because the TV Guide said it was rated PG and had strong language. The didn't even say " hell " in it. I guess I just wanted to see cussing cartoon animals or something.

I'm actually afraid to watch that movie again.

Well, " Rock and Rule " isn't really bad or anything. I guess it's on par with people comparing my poozjad guys to Jar Jar Binks. " Hepcats " is an anthro comic. It was pretty good though. I have most of them.
