You might want to check out some of Robert Crumb's Fritz comics. If those don't turn you off, you'll survive the movie. Heck, the movie was made by stringing together a lot of his comics.

I know of him, yes. I've never studied him that closely though.

I hate it when I reply and the reply goes at the top instead of as a reply and I can't delete it and I look like a dumbhead.

R. Crumb is a counterculture icon of the '60s. His works offend many, including some of his fans, because he doesn't hold back, and puts down whatever weird shit comes into his head. With Fritz the Cat it was mostly sex and drugs, but there's some racism thrown in. Not that he's necessarily supporting racism, more like he's not gentle to anyone.

He certainly did kick down a lot of walls, and even though I think there's a lot to dislike in his work, I do admire him for following his muse.

Most of the characters I like have that in common. They do their thing despite what everyone else thinks of it. Boober takes pleasure in laundry and cooking, Cantus follows his muse, Launchpad crashes planes, Brak...um...is Brak, Hexadecimal is cheerfully insane, and Gonzo dates a chicken, does stunts, and gets a weird kick out of pain.

I'm finding out you yourself are kinda famous. My brother recognized you cuz we were looking at Orko drawings and then he saw this thread we have going on. I've been on a He-Man kick lately.

Oh, you like MOTU? Cool! I've got a lot of fan art here and in my MOTU website, Castle Numbskull . CN also has my MOTU fanfic, but you wouldn't be interested in that.

I'm one of the few MOTU fans who doesn't give a flip about big muscular men with goofy, illogical powers. I mostly liked it for the cheese appeal, although I did genuinely enjoy the Trollans. Orko was my favorite character, and I have lots of cels of him, Dree Elle, and even Montork. Heh!

Yeah, I've like the original He-Man stuff forever. I didn't own the toys, ( my brother did, although, now, I'm prolly gonna haul them out of my parents' basement over to my place ). I think I played with them more than he did anyway.

I love it because it's so goofy and I freaking LOVE those new figures Mattel sells on-line. I got a handful of my favorites.... even Optikk from that 1989 series.

Yes, Orko has always been a fave of mine. I bought the DVDs since they stopped showing the original He-man on Saturdays so I can get my Filmation fix. They are so goofy but I can't help but love them. Plus, some of the episodes I haven't seen since they aired.

I drew Orko the other year on one of my Favorite Character memes.

How many websites do you have?

Negaduck9 In reply to Phraggle [2011-10-26 01:16:20 +0000 UTC]

I never was into the MOTU toys. The new figures... I dunno, the hype and the inclusion of characters too goofy for me (Snout Spout and Fisto, I'm looking at you!) turned me off. I can forgive Stinkor, 'cause the '00s cartoon actually made him into a fun character.

My personal websites are under the umbrella of The Negapage, but I have subsites for ReBoot, MOTU, Brak, Cats, icons, bento lunches and recipes, etc etc etc. Whatever catches my fancy. I've been meaning to add sites for my Oz and Muppet/Fraggle works.

Phraggle In reply to Negaduck9 [2011-10-29 22:55:39 +0000 UTC]

Part of the fun of MOTU in that they're so goofy though. There's weirder characters than Fisto. I only saw the Evilseed episode of the '00 series. I didn't much care for that series though. It lacked the heart of the original... and the goofiness. The'00 figures are cool though. I've been half-heartedly trying to get Orko & Whiplash from that line.

I've kinda wanted to make my own website. Haven't had much time to really think about it though. I sorta use DA as my base of operations though.

Negaduck9 In reply to Phraggle [2011-10-30 02:59:32 +0000 UTC]

The '00 series has its strengths and weaknesses. I like how it had an ongoing, evolving storyline, complete with character arcs that I really liked, such as Adam's struggle to grow into the shoes he's supposed to be wearing and Evil-Lyn's ever-changing loyalties. The animation was nifty, and they actually made stoopid characters like Stinkor and Two-Bad worth watching. On the other hand, it committed the unpardonable sin of Orko abuse. Instead of Orko being a master magician on his home planet who was handicapped on Eternia but could still use his abilities to advantage when push came to shove, he was just a lame, childish goofup with an annoying voice. And Man-at-Arms was an absolute SOB toward him, rather than just being annoyed but still friends. Grrr!

I have Orko--in fact, I have the regular version and a chase MOC. I didn't get any other figures except Teela and Evil-Lyn. I could help you if you were looking for Mekaneck, but who is?

Phraggle In reply to Negaduck9 [2011-10-30 23:23:56 +0000 UTC]

It did drive me nuts ( in a benign way ) that Adam never told Teela or his parents about his secret. Yeah... I dunno if I could ever get into the '00 MOTU. I just like the original. It's innocent... it's produced by a different generation... it's just it's own thing.

Mekaneck. He was the master of... necks. I think I may have the original... if I ever get around to taking my brother's figures from my parents' basement.

Negaduck9 In reply to Phraggle [2011-10-31 00:42:50 +0000 UTC]

You might like Adam's character arc in the '00 series. He got stuck with the role of He-Man, which he did not want, and he often hated to keep the secret, especially from Teela (who is as competitive and unsubtle as Red Fraggle) and his father. You get the feeling that if the series hadn't been cut short Adam would have fessed up to one of the two. Which one, I have no clue, as each one has pluses and minuses.

You're right about the '80s series being more innocent. In the '00 series, you get some more specifics on Teela's origin, and they even reveal who her father is. (It's one of the Masters, and he is unaware of the fact.) The characters were a bit more gentle toward each other, and all problems could be solved by tossing big rocks around. Me, I like things a bit more gritty. With the exception of Man-at-Arms, who was Mr. Grumpy Pants in the '00 incarnation.

We can agree that both are superior to the '90s series, can't we?

Phraggle In reply to Negaduck9 [2011-10-31 21:37:09 +0000 UTC]

To me, the original MOTU is so much it's own thing that it has to be the way it is. If it changed any, the change would need to be a slowish, subtle progression. I would like it if it were more gritty though, but since it's established the way it has been... it's hard to think of it otherwise. Maybe what would be cool is to take what's already been established with the Filmation series, and keep that as part of the continuity but tell new stories through a different lens or perspective. Kinda like from a standpoint of not really trying to cram morals down the viewers' throats.

I am interested in seeing the last episode where He-Man thinks he actually killed someone and gives up his powers. I don't recall having seen that. There's another that I don't think I've seen where somebody else discovers Adam's secret.

Negaduck9 In reply to Phraggle [2011-11-01 02:39:40 +0000 UTC]

Actually, there were '00 episodes that did go on from the Filmation continuity, but with their own take on things. A good example if the '00 telling of the Sorceress' origin, and of Teela's. It took the Filmation mythos and expanded it. Also, in The Witch and The Warrior we saw that Evil-Lyn's loyalties are not pure black & white, and that was brought forward as well.

The episode in which Adam thinks he killed someone and renounces the Power Sword is The Problem with Power, and it's one of the very best episodes. (You can get it on the cheapie "Best of" DVD.) That's one idea that really should have been brought forward into the '00 series--that the power that Adam has can be dangerous, and he could conceivably do harm with it--but it never was. Being a fanficcer, I wrote my own version: "More Power, More Problems", in which one of He-Man's decisions did lead to someone's death. Not in a way he could have foreseen, and maybe it was inevitable, but the point remains the same.

They were big on FCC-friendliness, so, yeah, morals were a big part of it. I've heard that in the original version of "The Problem with Power" someone was actually supposed to die as opposed to it being a trick. But ya can't have that on a kiddie show. Now excuse me while I go watch "Gone but Not Forgotten."

The Xmas He-Man/She-Ra special...ow. Part of me screams in horror when I watch that. Manchines, Skeletor making windbreakers for the kids, a zillion and one non-animated cameos, and above all Orko learning about Jesus. It makes my brain ache. But, y'know what, I still put that DVD in during the holiday season.

That's pretty cool that they'd do that. The Filmation episodes are kind of silly but there's something to them as well. I just like seeing them again after so long. I got the Christmas episode a few days ago.

Perhaps if the Filmation series went into a 3rd season, they would've gone a bit more serious. Hard to say though, cuz they were such sticklers for morals.... not that it was bad or wrong to be that way or anything.

" Gone But Not Forgotten " didn't * really * have a death in it either. They kinda went all butterfly with it.

I just wanna watch Skeletor in the Christmas special... Orko learned about Jesus? Wow. I may hafta bump that episode up on my watch list. I bought it cuz I heard Rattlor was in it. For some reason he only appeared in She-ra and wasn't a " Snake Man ".

I finally got to see a Clawful episode today. It's been years & I always liked him. I forgot he was in the Yuckers episode.

I don't like how they wembled on the death issue. He died... but not really. Death is only temporary. Oh, bull! "When people die, they don't come back, Big Bird."

Y'know what I wanted to see in that He-Man special? I wanted to see that stoopid little dog start gnawing on Skeletor's cheekbone. There's gotta be some prime marrow in there!

I like Clawful too. I enjoyed pairing him with Evil-Lyn in me fics 'cause they play off each other so well. Er, she plays off him well, anyway.

I guess the butterfly idea was the best way to quickly demonstrate the " Just a dream away " theme.

I see the dog on the DVD cover but barely remember it. Skeletor's face may have a curse of some form that makes it inedible or unappetizing to weird dog things.

I've only seen 2 Clawful eps so far but I've seen pics online where he's with Evil-Lyn. They gave him a lot more facial expressions than I remember... well, other than the scene where he digs trough Orko's hat that is. Those cartoons are a lot less " cookie-cutter " than I remember too, which is nice. I'm pleased that I'm enjoying the quality of these now.

You might get a giggle out of an old project of mine: MOTU Episodes-in-a-second . I did ultra-condensed (and often satirical) summaries of He-Man and episodes. I did the whole MYP series and about half of the '80s series.

It's "the first X-rated animated movie." It's... very sixties. And trippy. And not for the easily offended, because it just about embodies the Avenue Q song "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist." When I see it I think more about the culture it came from than the film itself.
