Download for full size! It's really big! This is the first time I actually had the presence of mind to take photos of my work along the way.
Now you can see how I go about doing these things. I don't map anything out, because well, it's an etchasketch. You have to get it right the first time, and there is no room for mistakes.

I think that the biggest tip I can give for getting good at using an etch-a-sketch is to practice practice practice!!!
I have been doing this for a very long time, but I did not start out this good. It took a lot of drawings on an etch-a-sketch to get where I am now.

well I suggest starting with the stereotypical staircase, to get used to the fell of how the knobs turn. Once you get used to how that works, try out shapes, like rectangles and triangles. Try to make a perfect square. If you can make a perfect square, and you can make a few of them no problem, try some triangles. Triangles require diagonal lines, which is a little more difficult. Drawing triangles on an etch-a-sketch requires you to turn both knobs at once. Draw a lot of them until you can draw a few perfect triangles in a row. After that, try out some more curvy shapes, like circles and ovals. This will require a different kind of skill because not only do you have to turn both knobs at once, but now you have to turn that at varying speeds.
Once you get used to drawing simple things like that, I'd suggest just trying to draw what you see in front of you, or maybe your favorite cartoon character. You want to keep it simple at first, but once you get used to drawing more simple things, you can give yourself more of a challenge.
If you do end up trying out the etch-a-sketch as a median, please keep me updated with your progress!

I believe this one took around an hour and a half.
It was somewhere between an hour and 2 hours.

Haha, well I taught myself how to use it as a kid, and my skills grew with my drawing skills.

Wow, you must have some serious patience! It looks great too... I'm amazed you can make such a good drawing on a tiny little etchasketch. It's not even the full sized one! I'm really in awe here!

Awesome! Do you ever mess up at the end and then have to restart the entire thing?

For this piece, yes, actually. I was about halfway through it, and I restarted it because the proportions were off. But for all the pictures for this process, I did not restart. t is all the same art piece at different stages.
Sometimes I restart a piece as many as 5 times before it gets to a point to where I like it.
