Description
A small two-man vessel equipped with a powerful broadband particle-EM hybrid weapon capable of cleaving through asteroids and other minor interstellar objects, for either mining or planetary defense purposes. It's also armed with a small light-ion cannon for secondary defense and an AI-controlled claw for object retrieval purposes. There are a few things wrong with this design (perspective errors and cel-style coloring in particular), but they're lessons to learn for next time. Kudos to Arzosoth , dasAdam , Shininou , and Tabnir for their help and suggestions.
Initial concept in Alchemy ; completed in PaintTool SAI.

Wonderful! I gotta design more of these ships now that you've taken one of my prints.

That is piloted by just two? Man the picture deceived me. XD

You see, those asteroids are very far away. But in the future, big guns come in small packages.

Interesting, why are the asteroids black? was thier a contrast issue, or are the asteroids made of some fictional material? Also, I think you should widen the beam nozzle and not have the beam widen as it travels. By making the beam spread like a flashlight, you loose the precision feel tht particle weapons and lasers have.
Again, my reviews are passive, and I mean no offense. The picture looks great, and you certainly know how to draw one cool sci-fi spacescape.

Technically, the asteroids are black because of their very rough surfaces, which scatter and absorb all light--although the white outlines wouldn't make much sense anyway. It's a stylistic approach, really.
The weapon isn't a laser or a particle emitter per se; it's a hybrid weapon that generates a variable-profile beam capable of carving large areas in one quick shot. Here, it's cutting a square-shaped outline into the hapless rock that got in its way. Compare this to a traditional energy shaft: narrow, often over-powered, and requires careful control for longer periods.
Thanks for the comments, as they do help me think more next time. See you around!

Hey thanks! The beam effects were a lot of fun to play around with, so I'm glad you like it.

nice one mate!
i got one suggestion. its hard to figure out aht the black spots are asteroids. simply because you added a glow to the outside. this makes the whole bg look a bit abstract . maybe you should have added some rimlights onto the rocks and have the background space having a normal gradient. then you could also add some neat rim lighting onto the vessel as well to implement it even more into the scene.
i dog he laser btw! its got a very graphical look but i like it as it is. it adds that cool oldschool sci fi feeling

Yeah, that's especially true if your monitor's brightness is turned down, since from a distance the asteroids' outlines fade into the blackness. I think I'll experiment around and try your suggestions out...
Old-school sci-fi was indeed what I was going for here. Good eye, man.

The perspective looks good. The color maybe too flat.

Thanks. I'll look into it, as "true" digital painting has been something I want to practice more with.

It's also a nasty beam that rarely stops for anything or anyone. Indeed, this vehicle is quite useful for mining purposes.
