The inspiration for this came when the lovely forested areas around my home came crashing down because of greedy humanity looking to make another buck.Ive grown up in the country my entire life; picturesque golden hills, ethereal forested groves, sun-dappled expanses of grass and the like were a part of my every day life here where I live..Watching those trees disappear daily made me think of not only my area, but of how, across the entire world, humans are destroying the earth in so many different ways...and it kills me to see it taken away, to know that the habitats for so many animals are being destroyed.. That lovely, years old trees are being ripped to shreds and bushes burned.. That garbage and junk and man-made products and chemicals are poisoning this earth...and it made me realize:
Human-kind is Mother Nature's very own special brand of Cancer.
And like with cancer, we dont have a cure yet, and hell, we probably cant fix all the damage weve caused to this planet anyway...but we have to hope and try and keep fighting to save this Earth from ourselves.
Sorry for the passionate (and long) speech, but some things need passion, and sometimes you just need some visual and verbal inspiration to help make others feel that passion too.
As for the art itself, its done with charcoal and ink/watercolors. The ribbon shaped in the cancer symbol was actually completely unintentional..I didnt realize the shape it made til I had the first layer of red on..but when I realized it, it was one of those moments where everything seemed to come full circle and just felt right. This piece was for my Drawing 2 class, but it is an idea that I have had in the back of my mind for years..it just took some (unfortunate) re-inspiration from the deforestation to come to fruition. I even found some old (horribly drawn) sketches of the idea from when I was young, but only recently have I developed the ability to be able to get my idea across properly..even with that said, I think in the future I would really love to revisit the concept.

your technical skill is definitely up to par. i like graphite a lot because it adds a bonus to anything realistic you're trying to draw, especially trees. my only criticism is to make the highlights on the branches a little slimmer, and move them more towards the top edge for lighting effect; only metal shines directly towards the viewer's eyes and reflects this much light.
as for the message, i completely agree. i work in recycled materials because i can't bear to waste when so much is already being wasted on this earth. i don't know if you've heard, but there's a Buddhist saying (or maybe taoist), that we can never erase the damage we have done to the earth by being on it. i don't remember the actual quote, but it makes more sense of this being in that case of the individual. to elaborate, i was born on this earth, and everything i've done since then has either hurt it or helped it, but my help will never outweigh the hurt i've done. i just think it's so awful that people can bear the ignorance of making everything so much worse, right in front of their eyes, like in deforestation, blatant pollution, our millions of pounds of garbage. if you've never seen the documentary "Wasteland" and you don't mind subtitles, you should watch it.

Thank you! I definitely agree with you about the tree highlight, I wish I had noticed that as I was making it! And I think I just fell in love with that saying, it is so utterly true, though quite disheartening. But at least there are people out there who are trying, like you...its very inspiring to hear that you chose to go into a career dealing with recycling that could help earth over maybe something that would have made boatloads of money like most others do. I wish everyone, including myself, could be as awesome lol As for Wasteland, I think I will try to check it out if I get the chance. Thanks again for the feedback
