Description Part of a kaaring payment to TealMagpie on behalf of ANIMALGIRL1869 . Sneaky things are happening here, shhh.

I wanted to give "do a mechanical pencil shaded piece and color it in SAI" a true go. I must say I really enjoy this technique, especially now that my colored pencils seem to hate me D: (not even kidding, I swear one of them tried to stab me in the face the other day when it fell from the desk that I was under. Don't ask what I was doing under the desk... )

Anyway, this time I actually shaded the colors in SAI as well, instead of just blocking the colors under the shaded piece like I did before. Hopefully, the difference can be easily noticed xD

I personally don't like doing eye blink animations, but I was dismayed at the thought of this only being worth 0.5 kaaring after the amount of work and time I put into it, so I gave it a little boost. /shot

Hehe thank you, but this one isn't done in colored pencils, it's mechanical pencil with a digital color layer underneath (:
Where do I know you from? You seem awfully familiar!

It is possible we may have talked on here in the past or perhaps on other sites. Have you ever been on any graphic chat sites?

Mmm... I've never been on any chat site, so no. It's possible I just recognize your username/art from hanging around dA clicking on random people among the Equine Community

Gorgeous I think it looks far more impressive this way
And I agree about the blink-y animations. I'm not particularly fond of doing them, but they're useful for Kaaring and Veritas, especially when deadlines are involved

PolarisAstrum In reply to JEAikman [2014-10-08 11:32:13 +0000 UTC]

Glad you think so! There will definitely be more works done like this in the future. They allow me to practice my graphite/mechanical pencil shading skills AND digital coloring skills. 2 in 1, what more can I ask for?
I agree! But it really depends on how they're used. I mean if someone does a gorgeous piece with lots of details and makes a blink-y animation, it doesn't bother me that much, it's when people do sheets of uncolored sketches with blink-y eyes that it starts bothering me. But to each their own

Thank you so much!

I'd definitely be happy to see more of it

there are people that do that? huh. I mean, I've been guilty of blink-y headshots a couple times, but always lined and coloured ones

You're welcome

There used to be a lot of those around Nordanner, for example. I think with the "no kaaring sheets" rule, they stopped being so common, but yeah xD

So how did you do this? Β Did you scan it and put the colors on overlay layers or what? Or is there a technique to get the colors underneath the lines? This looks really cool!Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PolarisAstrum In reply to Sunidelite [2014-10-07 07:52:22 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

There are a few ways to go about this, one of them is to set the layer with the traditional piece to overlay and color on a layer beneath it, but it has some disadvantages because setting the sketch to overlay (or other modes that make it "see through") messes with the colors underneath. That is the easiest way to do it though, as far as I know.
To avoid the colors being messed with, I scan the traditional piece and clean it up a bit in PS and then turn it into a brush, this makes the piece see through too and allows you to paint underneath without messing with the colors you're using. Then I just do a new piece on a white or transparent background and use the brush I created on a separate layer. Then you can just paint on a layer beneath that one and there you go! It takes a bit more work than the overlay technique, but I feel it looks so much better.

I hope that helps! If you have any doubts, feel free to note me (:

Wow, that's so interesting! I am pretty much teaching myself anything I try to do so I think I am doing a lot of things either incorrectly or way more difficult than they need to be. Β this is such a beautiful style that I want to work on, but I just haven't been getting it right. Β Hopefully this will help me out a lot. Β Thanks so much for explaining!
