It comes,
along the graves of the forgotten,
to greet old friends in the twilight.
Both soldiers of battles and infants who never had a chance,
those cruel winters long ago.
Tender paws step between headstones,
tasting the evening's starlit dew off crooked crosses,
and old sun-bleached plastic flowers,
left years ago.
The creature pauses,
it's somber head dips to a disfigured statue,
once a sweet cherub,
plucking individual leaves with a fuss.
Photographs laid in a mess underneath the leaves,
holding in the Fall air's chill.
A mother's frequent visits
turned in rarely,
as age crept up.
The creature's tail held solemn,
trying to remember when it saw the snow-haired
Years.
looking at the empty plot next to the Cherub,
shoulders sag.
It seemed like no-one remembered,
where sweet baby waited for his mother's warm embrace.
after all this time.
Shush shush, sweet babe,
it nuzzles gently,
It comes,
along the graves of the forgotten,
to greet old friends in the twilight.
Tender paws arrange tattered photos,
as snow-haired mother would,
years ago.
