Description
My first proper tutorial! The tutorial covers these areas of digital drawing:
The Cisqua and the Mudkip pic was specially designed for this tutorial.
More tips:
As for smudging, people complained soft shades are harder than cel shading. Use various sizes of fuzzy brushes and mainly remember to lower the opacity of them, that gives you better control over them.
I strongly recommend viewing other tutorials on anything you need - inking, colouring... everybody has a little different approach (though the basic ideas are the same) but you could pick up some useful tips and tricks and learn by seeing the art itself.
If you make something with the use of this tutorial, post a link, I would love to see it!
NOTE: My GIMP is in Czech, so the translations may not be 100% correct, but I hope everything will be clear from the pictures. Anyway, in case of more troubles, feel free to ask!
NOTE 2: This is an old version of GIMP, so the new one has slightly different icons and more functions, but the tools remain.
Gimp can be downloaded here: [link] It is for free.
Thanks for comments+faves, I'm incredibly happy you find it useful!

This will help me out so much with Gimp! Sometimes when I do the smudging I get this weird white stuff mixed in with it and it makes me sick, but thanks a ton for this advice.

what version are you using?

pralinkova-princezna In reply to zadel16 [2011-06-12 09:21:37 +0000 UTC]
It was GIMP 2.2, if I am correct. The tool may be called differently in another version, like Draw in Ink or similarly. Try them out, it will be one of them.

Hey, do you know how to get rid of those weird colors after you merge layers? I have to get rid of those for a contest. T^T

I mean when I save a pic, it'll create distoreted colors around lineart and other spots. I'm not sure if it's GIMP or just my computer.

Not sure, it shouldn't happen when you merge layers. Have you tried saving as another format?

Something is wrong with the Path Tool in my Gimp..it says it has to shut Gimp, and it does. But it does everything else. Did you go through the same thing?

I didn't work with paths much but when I did, I never had any problem. Try another version of GIMP, some versions may not work well under some operation systems.

Scan the pencil sketch paper into your computer, (you'll need a scanner to do this, obviously) save it, open gimp, select "open file", find the newly scanned-in image and opne it. It's quite easy, really. C:

Hey I have a question that you may not be able to answer but can you please help? Right below the toolbox they give you options like brush options everything options. But I accidently did something that deleted it and now all it says in the lower toolbox is you can drop dockable dialogs here! please help me!

I am not sure if I understand your problem. If you closed brush options, you can open them by 2x clicking the black dot (next to colour options).

extreeme noob here.... is inking literally scanning a sketch and then using your mouse to draw over it in GIMP/PS/Paint/whatever? or is it easier than that? Not that i'm just lazy, but I just wasnt sure if it was some automatic program or if you just trace over it.
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
pralinkova-princezna In reply to ClaireTheBozo [2011-02-01 06:23:23 +0000 UTC]
I recommend using a tablet, not a mouse.
If your lines are super clear, you can scan them and let as they are, just make more contrast (so you have rather b/w image than in shades of grey), and then colour as said above, just you will probably need to select the areas for colouring manually more.
If you can't get a tablet, ink your lines with a felt tip pen and erase the pencil when it is dry so you don't smudge your work, and scan. It should be quite fine.

Haha yeah, I have two tablets now... just now when I commented that. :b
But I understand inking and GIMP now, thanks to a few non-noob friends. Thanks for the advice anyway.

Wistfull-Dreams In reply to ClaireTheBozo [2010-11-26 01:25:01 +0000 UTC]
Nope, you go over it yourself. You trace the scanned in picture ^^
Or, if you go to the paths tool, go over your lines in a new layer, then click stroke path, you can choose what size you want your lines to be, and it will then do it for you. ^^
