Description
My first proper tutorial! The tutorial covers these areas of digital drawing:
The Cisqua and the Mudkip pic was specially designed for this tutorial.
More tips:
As for smudging, people complained soft shades are harder than cel shading. Use various sizes of fuzzy brushes and mainly remember to lower the opacity of them, that gives you better control over them.
I strongly recommend viewing other tutorials on anything you need - inking, colouring... everybody has a little different approach (though the basic ideas are the same) but you could pick up some useful tips and tricks and learn by seeing the art itself.
If you make something with the use of this tutorial, post a link, I would love to see it!
NOTE: My GIMP is in Czech, so the translations may not be 100% correct, but I hope everything will be clear from the pictures. Anyway, in case of more troubles, feel free to ask!
NOTE 2: This is an old version of GIMP, so the new one has slightly different icons and more functions, but the tools remain.
Gimp can be downloaded here: [link] It is for free.
Thanks for comments+faves, I'm incredibly happy you find it useful!

I have a little question In the last description (When you save it) where do you go to in order to shrink it? And what do you mean by sharpen a little 10 < pixels?

I usually right click, go to layer>scale layer. then choose your size. You have to do this for every individual layer though.

You don't. Save the image as a .bmp and then rescale the whole image. I would go crazy if my picture has 40+ layers.

What size do you normally choose for your pictures?

Draw in a bigger size than you will post. For some reason it looks better. Also if you want to make a print later, the huge size will be handy.
If you shrink, always sharpen slightly afterwards (10-20 pixels is ok).
For showing on web make it fit to screen on the longer side, if possible, so not more than 1200 pixels in width, I would say. Just so it is comfortable to look at it and enjoy.

Whatever you want it to be. Great changes (say, 1,000 pixels to 300 pixels) can make the lines go pixley and horrible and/or fuzzy, so try and make the picture close to the size you want to change it to.

Thing is, everytime I try to change the size, it either comes out too small or too large. I'm not exactly familiar with the sizes ^^" I don't know how large or small a pixel is.

A screen has typically these sizes in pixels:
800 x 600
1024 x 768 - I have this one
1680 x 1050

Okay, what you have to do is fiddle around until you get the right size. If I had one too big, and re-sized it too small, I would undo it and choose a size between them (A pixel is very tiney. If you choose your smallest brush, and zoom in to about 800%, you can see how small a pixel is
)

Ok, alright ^^ Thanks. Would you recommend keeping it as a pixel or changing it to something else?

Keep it to pixel, if you change it you could get all sorts of random sizes xD

Hi, the tutorial was really helpful, so thank you for making it. I've been looking all over this site and google, but I feel like an idiot for asking. I don't have time most of the time, and I'm afraid if I save my picture while the layers are still there, and unfinished, it will automatically merge them. So everytime I start a picture I HAVE to finish it that day, or start all over and try to finish it.

Just save it as a .xcf and it will save your layers.

If you save the image as a .xcf image and the layers should remain there until next time you open the file

what I luv about freeware is that there is a small but focused and dedicated cadre. This group can often get more done than a big community.

Nice tutorial!
GIMP surely is as good as PS. Photoshop has many more shiny features, which you probably WON'T use. And added that GIMP is FREE (and NEARLY as good) and Photoshop costs a SHITLOAD of money!!

For my purposes GIMP is fully sufficient, hence as good as PS for me.

Asrath In reply to pralinkova-princezna [2011-02-01 19:21:22 +0000 UTC]
yea, same here.
PS is actually too expensive for the 'casual user', which cannot and will not know all possible features but only the most common one. The ones that are also found on GIMP
I mainly use the layers and some nice tools, but filters, for example, I hardly use.

This helped sooo muchhhh. [link]
I made that with this tutorial.
Just one thing. I had to use the selection tool instead of the Magic wand to select my skin, shirt, etc.
When I clicked the magic want then the lineart, it selected the whole body.
Again, thanksss(:

Change setting of the magic wand, set less tolerance (diameter, treshold).

Hey quick question.. hopefully I figure it out before someone has to answer... I saved my image as the .XCF as instructed, but when open it I can't do anything with my image.. I can't ink, draw on or edit it. -.- What's the stupid mistake I'm making here? ;s

That happens to me too sometimes. D: Are you using a tablet? Because sometimes I have to just open it using the tablet. I don't undertstand why it does it though. If you're not using a tablet I don't know, sorry.

That is odd. Could the file be corrupted? It sometimes happens when GIMP crashes, so I recommend saving more versions... Or try restarting GIMP or the whole computer. Otherwise I cannot imagine what the problem can be.
