pralinkova-princezna — GIMP tutorial - as good as PS

Description My first proper tutorial! I so enjoyed making it. There are not many GIMP tutorials here, definitely not as many as for Photoshop, and this program is still underrated. I want to advertise it as a tool equal to Photoshop.

The tutorial covers these areas of digital drawing:
inking
colouring
shading (with the use of Levels)
text adjustments

The Cisqua and the Mudkip pic was specially designed for this tutorial. XD See it finished here: [link]

More tips:
As for smudging, people complained soft shades are harder than cel shading. Use various sizes of fuzzy brushes and mainly remember to lower the opacity of them, that gives you better control over them.

I strongly recommend viewing other tutorials on anything you need - inking, colouring... everybody has a little different approach (though the basic ideas are the same) but you could pick up some useful tips and tricks and learn by seeing the art itself.
If you make something with the use of this tutorial, post a link, I would love to see it!

NOTE: My GIMP is in Czech, so the translations may not be 100% correct, but I hope everything will be clear from the pictures. Anyway, in case of more troubles, feel free to ask!

NOTE 2: This is an old version of GIMP, so the new one has slightly different icons and more functions, but the tools remain.

Gimp can be downloaded here: [link] It is for free.

Thanks for comments+faves, I'm incredibly happy you find it useful!

Looks like your file is in grayscale. Set Image > Regime(?) > RGB, then it should work (I hope it is there, I haven't it open now.)
And I am glad this was useful to you.

I'll give this a try. Can I send you another message if it doesn't work, or it's not that? (XD you're like...my only hope, as pathetic as that sounds.)

Thanks again!!!

yes! it works! Thanks a million.

Oh! Another question, it doesn't pertain to the color bit but ...how do i properly save an image i'm working on, on GIMP? Because, I don't have the tablet so i do it all with the mouse (lineart) so it takes me a while to work on my stuff. Well, i go to save it so as to work on it later on but when i open up the picture, all of the layers seem to have "smooshed" together to form one picture. Like, my unfinished lineart layer and the white background.

How do I save it properly so as to continue working on it, long after i've closed the window of GIMP?

pralinkova-princezna In reply to InuKa-RR-Hijinkessou [2009-04-30 14:22:02 +0000 UTC]

But even that can be solved, make the white transparent and you will have a lineart again. In merging modes set it on Multiply. (see above how)

That is in the tutorial too, as .xcf. NOT bmp, jpg, gif nor png. That is the final step.

Read many tutorials and try to imitate the styles, choose what you like, observe paintings and imagine how this or that was done, then try it out and have fun.

every tip or w/e helps to realize more how to do stuff.. so im glad.

im gonna read many tutorials and pick the part of styles i want to create my own like you told the other guy,, cause every style has positive and sometimes negative sides
