Description
My first proper tutorial! The tutorial covers these areas of digital drawing:
The Cisqua and the Mudkip pic was specially designed for this tutorial.
More tips:
As for smudging, people complained soft shades are harder than cel shading. Use various sizes of fuzzy brushes and mainly remember to lower the opacity of them, that gives you better control over them.
I strongly recommend viewing other tutorials on anything you need - inking, colouring... everybody has a little different approach (though the basic ideas are the same) but you could pick up some useful tips and tricks and learn by seeing the art itself.
If you make something with the use of this tutorial, post a link, I would love to see it!
NOTE: My GIMP is in Czech, so the translations may not be 100% correct, but I hope everything will be clear from the pictures. Anyway, in case of more troubles, feel free to ask!
NOTE 2: This is an old version of GIMP, so the new one has slightly different icons and more functions, but the tools remain.
Gimp can be downloaded here: [link] It is for free.
Thanks for comments+faves, I'm incredibly happy you find it useful!

There is a button for making the layers visible, like an eye... if I understand correctly.
Layers should be separate.

Ah.. you set if you want smoothing, permeation.. I guess copy the values I have here and then change them slightly and see what it does. I am sorry I cannot help more, since I rather experiment myself.

I'm stuck D:
I get confused when using tutorials, so don't think this is bad or anything! XD
Just... I don't really get how to do the layers correctly.

pralinkova-princezna In reply to Ergonina [2009-07-05 17:14:28 +0000 UTC]
Imagine layers as transparent foils laying on each other. One at the bottom contains only the sketch, then more foils contain colours, each one, and on top of it all is the lineart. If you want to make changes to only one colour or the lineart - resizing, redrawing.., there is no danger you damage the rest of the picture. You can also toggle layers' visibility. They are still there, just invisible (click the eye).
I recommend seeing other tutorials especially for layers if you still have problems, or ask me what specifically the problem is. Hope it helped!

It did, but again, I'm stuck.
How do you get the under layers (lets say for the hair) to come through?
I have the INK layer on top, and all of the other underneath, but I can't seem to get them to come through when I try to color.

Maybe you drew the lineart on a white layer, not a transparent one. Set the merging mode of the lineart layer to Multiply, that will make all white transparent. Always draw on transparent layers, like the foils, not white papres.

This tutorial is awesome! Thanks so much for posting it!
I had a question....
I'm on the step where I'm using the Magic Wand to select the area I want to color. (I'm following the directions right.)
I click on the Bucket Tool and click the area I want colored. I chose the foreground color by now.
But when I click it, it comes out gray, where nowhere had I selected the color gray.
And just to make sure, I went back to the lineart layer and clicked another area - while unclicking the other - and on its own layer, attempting to color it a different color.
It just appears as another shade of gray.
Could you help me out, please?
