The reason why the front end is so massive is 'cause it's a clone of the Lewis Gun. Around the barrel is a large, finned aluminum heat sink, around that is a cover that goes to the muzzle. The cover is open at each end so the force of the muzzle blast moving forward sucks air along with it from the back. This is called "forced air cooling."
The heat sink is not a part of the receiver and can be removed, but that takes away the main advantage of the system.
So, this is sillier than one might originally think.

They original designed the "Assault Rifle" as either a light machine gun/large assault rifle for power armoured soldiers and abandoned their other models for it. Either that or they liked the design so much they had to stuff it in somewhere.
