Since not all art softwares have the glow setting/mode on brushes, maybe try through the layers or use something like screen layer if you still can't.
I know that galaxies are like those big giant objects you see, but it's just the way I call stuff... it's mostly just space.
Anyway, this is one of the ways I like to do my space backgrounds and stuff, also patterns on character designs.
