I have a noobish question. How do you get those checkered squares like in the InuYasha sig?

Use the magic wand tool to select the area inside the cells, then fill in whatever colors you want.

haha... i thought the deleted part would be checkered for some insane reason... but then i realised it had to be white O_O so i got it! thanks so much for the tutorial... now peoples on my favorite website are asking me to make banners... lol

i tried the FIRST step... and it failed... it ended up white, not checkered...

Hmm....Did the part where you actually created the pattern work? Also, are you sure you filled the canvas with the pattern, and not a color (white)?
