Description This is another piece of music by me!
I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT.

It's... bizarre though. Maybe. So I'm unsure if people WILL like any of it at all, or if it'll just be ANNOYING...
I started composing it last night, and worked on it all day today and finished it pretty quickly, really, considering that it's... 392 bars long and 111 pages of sheet music in Sibelius, and is like 14:37 minutes long. o_O
Also, there are multiple instruments this time instead of just a piano (there's a piano, harp, 'strings', flute (WHICH SOUNDS AWFUL, ACTUALLY o_O) and clarinet).

There's a lot of variety in this piece, so I'd very much prefer it if people would listen to all of it before commenting (since the best bits are probably near the end anyway), and, uh, if there are any specific parts that you particularly like, mention them! Same with parts you DISlike especially. I'm so very curious about which parts of my music might be likeable or unlikeable.
(Heh, there's one bit that makes me laugh, and I BET PEOPLE HATE THAT BIT.)

Oh, I must as always apologise for the poor sound quality. For one thing, it was a midi to begin with, so the quality was bad enough, but then I had to reduce the sound quality to make this Flash file of a bearable size...
You can download the original midi by clicking the link in the thing, but then it might sound different to how it was intended anyway because different midi players play instruments differently...

ANYWAY. LISTEN TO IT. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK. TELL ME WHICH BITS YOU LIKE. TELL ME WHICH BITS YOU DON'T LIKE.
CONGRATULATIONS FOR READING THIS FAR.
Congratulations also if you can hum or whistle the melody throughout the entire piece! 8D

Ardrung (n.) - 1. A musical composition; a piece of music. Better than saying 'song', because not every piece of music is a song. 2. The middle finger of a green whale's third hand.

I have to say...This is actually one of my Favorites out of what you've composed. :3 It's so...pretty. kinda upbeat with so much; how say, whimsical energy? Not sure if I even spelled that right, whoopies if I didn't. >>;

If you want a better-sounding music software, just download Finale Notepad 2008 at [link] and try it out (it's free). The wind and string instruments (except for the violin) sound good, but the piano still lacks some good sound. And if you do try it out, I suggest adjusting the reverb control in the Instrument Listing and set it to Large hall @ around 40-50 for an echo effect. :]
You can get results like this: [link] [link]

Anyway, this song isn't really my favorite (since I personally prefer sad songs to inspire me), but it's nicely done and most of the notes sound in harmony with each other (unlike some of my stuff) However, I think leaving out the other instruments would've been better. I kind of wished you played in reality because it would sound way better, since you could humanly apply pedal and easily make things quieter. :] Also, I suggest making some parts of the song quiet and some parts louder instead of making it all one volume. It would also be nice if your music software could do some reverb on the instruments to make it sort of echo instead of making it sound like game music.
Try shortening the songs you create instead of making it really long as huge as 14 minutes (which can sometimes bore people if there isn't a nice climax in the song). I notice most of your songs linger around more than 8 minutes. Sometimes shorter songs can have great meaning, even piano songs as short as 50 seconds.

Overall, it's good. It's just too long without any clear theme/melody.

Besides that, I thought it was well done!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Pseudolonewolf In reply to Kunoichi-Rekaina [2007-07-10 18:56:10 +0000 UTC]

I think it's because the piano starts playing in a different time to the rhythm that's already there at that point (groups of 4 notes over groups in definite 6/4 time), which is... unusual and was meant to throw people off guard or something! Y'know, to... make sure they're paying attention? o_O
I think that music that's too typically harmonious or gently and consistently rhythmic can get dull...

Anyway, thank you for listening to my music!

I found that 6:20 to about 7:52 I believe was kind of boring and repetetive anyways as well as 13:20 to about 13:52 was also kind of boring and repetitive, but otherwise I liked it very much. And another thing is that you really shouldn't say if you think that people won't like your music... It might make people actually not like it just from you saying that. I personally thought it was much better than any music I have either written or listened to but most of mine is rock and likewise, and I think that this comes along with age because a year ago I would have thought this sucked more than anything in the world. Saying it is good is a lot coming from me... seriously, with most things I'll be like "That sucks!" and whatnot.

I love it, though it's hard to say I like it because it's almost more of a set. I hate that computer-composed songs can sound so cheesy when the instruments are bad... It just lacks that.. human quality, you know? You still managed to get a lot of feeling into the piece(s), well done. Heck, very well done.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pseudolonewolf In reply to tsong-ming-yi [2007-03-17 13:30:17 +0000 UTC]

Guh, it annoys me, actually, how the midi instruments sound sometimes... I'd rather I had some better-sounding program at least, but... sound quality doesn't bother me that much. I mean, I pay attention to the notes rather than the sound quality - like how I pay attention to gameplay rather than graphics in games - taking the shallow level as it is and not judging based on that.
But unfortunately, not many people seem to do that, and complain if the 'sound quality' isn't good (or so I've found from some people... T_T
Thankfully nobody who's commented on this though!)

I do know what you mean by that 'cheesy' sound, though. A lot of midis *sound* like... well, midis. Or something. I try to avoid that somewhat!

Anyway, I'm done ranting now I suppose!
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO THIS AND LIKING IT! o_O

tsong-ming-yi In reply to Pseudolonewolf [2007-03-18 23:59:47 +0000 UTC]

And you do a good job keeping it only semi-cheesy, which has so far been near impossible for me on my composing program. I can't seem to figure out how to make them midis or waves either, so I'm rather stuckO.o I'm glad I'm not the only one who looks past game graphics and and things like that, though...

tsong-ming-yi In reply to Pseudolonewolf [2007-03-21 00:05:13 +0000 UTC]

I think you showed it to me in the first place; it's Microsoft DirectMusic Producer. I like it for what it's worth, I don't want to invest much in a midi composing program and it was a free download.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pseudolonewolf In reply to tsong-ming-yi [2007-03-21 14:53:48 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I thought it might be that that you'd be using!
DirectMusic Producer is really rather useful and versatile if you get good at using it.
Also, I can tell you how to export the files you make as midis or wavs!
There should be a toolbar thing at the top somewhere with like... several sections. First, there'd be a greyed-out textbox-like thing, then a button labelled "...", and then another button with some symbol on it. There are two of those; on for wav and one for midi. Clicking the ellipsis button allows you to choose a filename, and when you've done that, press the symbol button and it'll stay down. THEN play the segment like you normally would; when it's finished and stopped, the midi should be saved.
If that toolbar isn't visible, you should be able to get it to show by selecting it from the View menu thing...
And if you DO get some midis that you've made to export, then maybe submit them to my ART.midi site thing perhaps? It's always interesting to hear music made by people!

I AM LISTENING TO THIS ON ART.MIDI SO I CAN SEE THE SHEET MUSIC!
So uhh... I will return to this comment in 14 minutes and 36 seconds...
..............
..............
ARE YOU TRYING TO DECEIVE ME, MAN?! Your ART.midi submission states that your Ardrung is fourteen minutes and thirty-SEVEN seconds long! =_=
Uhh... Hey, I scribbled notes down on my desk as I was listening to that so I would be able to point out which bits I liked in particular! Now if only I had written down what I liked about them! o_O
Apparently I liked some bit that started somewhere around the 160th bar... and without mentioning where that ended, I made another note saying I liked the bit that started around the 193rd bar... I particularly liked bars 225 and 226. There's a star beside that note. 237-258 was rather interesting, the first word that came to mind when I was listening to it was "enchanting."
Apparently I also liked bars 301-304. I thought that bit flowed really well and just... was pleasing. YES. I really rather like bars 308-332... THAT PART SOUNDS GOOD TO ME! o_O I can't say I know why, it's just an appealing, well-paced bit.
Oh, and 370 onward to the end. That was good too.
Though, I think the accidentals (if that's even the right word/usage of... o_O) nearer the beginning sounded a little... awkward in some areas... or something.
ALL AROUND, I thought it was very interesting to listen to! I was actually surprised at how... quickly the time went by. o_O
THE VARIATIONS WERE EXCITING. That is, I was always thinking about how you were going to make a transition to one bit to the next. I LIKED IT! I also wonder how long this comment is so far!

And hurrah! Definition! Let's get that word published in some Aerie of Diction! Then the whole world won't have to ask what an ardrung is when they see our Ardrungly titled ardrungs and uh... they won't be allowed to use the word themselves because uhh... it will be considered *taboo* for anyone who isn't a Firequill or a Pseudolonewolf to use it.

I can't really think of all that much to say in response though, but, uh... YOU CHOSE GOOD BITS TO LIKE!? o_O
I mean, I like those bits too! But I like basically all the bits. Yes. I sure like bits.
Uh... huh.

But it's good to know which exact bits you liked and so on!

I wonder if we use the word 'ardrung' enough, people will adopt it themselves and in like three years, six weeks, four days and seven hours it'll be added to The Dictionary and we'll earn millions!
Or rather, I will.
Because, uh... I SAY SO.
That's right. =_=

Thank you for taking the time to listen, and I'm glad you like it!

Songs bore and probably annoy me, actually, with their... usually single melody and mood that they generally have. I like pieces with a lot of variety like the ones I compose... I find them more *interesting* and less predictable!
But less memorisable maybe...

I wonder if most people prefer complexity and variety or a simple melody that they can pick up and hum the first time they listen to the piece of music... o_O

Golden-Dragon-Girl In reply to Pseudolonewolf [2007-03-17 23:17:58 +0000 UTC]

I think most people prefer the single tune-- probably because it's the only thing they can remember without much effort, but I tend to like both, and I really enjoy it when I can listen to a piece continuously without getting bored with it and without the regular beginning/end stopping points. (Shrugs) It's easier to work to music like that.

I THINK THAT THE PIANO IS THE GREATEST INTSTRUMENT IN THE WORLD!
I'd always wanted to learn it, but annoyingly I never got the chance, and oh how I envy those people who were forced by their parents to learn the piano when they were like five years old...
I play the piano now, but I only started learning when I was sixteen or so (that's like... under three years ago), and I only had lessons for about a year but then started learning by myself...
I'm not very good at all though because I started late, and there was nobody to force me to practice things like scales and et cetera, so my technique's sloppy...
Still. I'm currently learning the "Fighting" thing from Advent Children (the actual thing, not some simplified version or anything!), and can almost play it. Which is nice. o_O
I'm still so very jealous of those people who got to learn early though!

Also, I suppose my music sounds like game music because game music is my main inspiration, and most of the music I compose is for my own games... HMMM!!
