Thanks a lot! Perhaps you should; staying in a hut isn't too expensive.

Like the fact that you didn't crop it. It give it more of a floating sense. Great shot and very dream like. Simply amazing.

Thanks a lot, man! I was hoping for a surreal scene with the full reflection & saturation, so your compliment means a ton.

O_o talk about a beautiful place. How did you get this kind of photo?

purembc In reply to KRHPhotography [2012-08-07 21:30:48 +0000 UTC]
It is, quite.
Well, the water had to be perfectly still for starters, which was pretty rare up there & since it's up in the mountains a lens filter is probably necessary or the colours tend to get drowned out.
Otherwise, it's an HDR photo, meaning 3 separate photos taken at 1.6 exposure intervals, then combined to capture all of the details, from the darks to the lights. It's the HDR that allows me to further bring out the reflection.
Mostly it's just a beautiful place, and the water is ridiculously clear (since it's glacial run-off) so it reflects well. Mind you, this isn't the sort of location you can just stroll up to one summer morning; it's 27 km. into the mountains.

ok, thank you for the info! I've tried doing some stuff with hdr, but I've yet to get it to work haha.

I recommend Photomatix if you aren't already using it. HDR works much better if you use a tripod to ensure consistency (though photomatix does do a solid job of re-aligning the photos), but in all honesty I do most of my shots free-hand. I presume you're using the AEB function on your camera-- if not, use it! Making HDR photos is pretty simple, really, though it doesn't have too impacting an effect on most scenes. It's really only useful on scenes with a wide range of tones, or simply huge contrast, because it allows you to see all of the tones you can't with just one exposure. It works well on this scene, because it allows me to achieve a sharp sky and reflection, when normally the water would be impossibly dark, or the sky would be way overexposed.

ah, ok. I've heard of Photomatix, but I've never used it. And I haven't used the AEB function either, so I'll have to figure that out too.

On that note; I see you're from Iceland. I was looking into travelling there as well. That also seems a pretty ideal place for landscape photography I'm a little apprehensive with the primary spoken language not being English, though.

Indeed No worries, Icelanders are competent English speakers, especially those working the tourist industry.

It seems to be a place packed full of rich, clear lakes and surreal mountain ranges. I'm sure I'll visit there again some day.
Thank you very much
