I've been contemplating custom sprites... with photoshop and my tablet, it may be possible to get some darn good sprites

Could be interesting, but I'd advise stopping them from doing that... Anti-aliasing thing. Seeing as I've never played around with Photoshop extensively, I don't know if you can switch it off, but Paint.net has it so I would assume Photoshop does.
So, you mean scratch sprites, right? From the ground up?
