Description
Well this is a screen capture of one of my current projects. See this journal entry for further details: [link]This is a working prototype by the way, not just a mock-up interface.
So far I have two types of drawing tools, resizeable brushes, layers and transparency.
It can work with multiple image windows too. Additionally, when a new picture is started another window will open asking for a name and its dimensions.
I am considering the inclusion of a quick-access menu for tablet use but such ideas are only in my head for now

After doing a bit of research, I decided Open Canvas wasn't the program I thought it was... I guess I was imagining Corel Painter. A bit of a difference, no? XD
That kind of makes C# sound like a step above C++, and a step in the direction of Java. Java with pointer management, header files, and operator overloading, maybe? >_>
This sure sounds like a fun project. With regards to your journal, my interest is mostly in the programming side of things - I think it'd be cool to work on. But that's not the interest you're talking about, is it? I'm not a tablet user, and I've never done anything with Open Canvas, so a replacement/alternative to OC wouldn't matter a whole lot to me as an artist, in which sense the main way this program would stand out for me is in the multiplayer aspect you're talking about. Those kinds of programs do exist, though, so Awesome Canvas would still need something that it stands out for. As far as the financial side of things, I think £10-15 would be more fair if, say, you added support to draw in colo(u)r.
Seriously, though, I don't know the value of things. Even if something is only £5 (or US$8, as the case may be >_>), the very hassle of actually paying for it is almost always enough to dissuade me and make me seek out a free alternative. In short, I don't know that I myself would pay £15 for most programs, unless it was Photoshop-quality (£15 for Photoshop? Yes, please!
). That being said, paying as a means of supporting the programmer is somewhat of a different matter.

Colour will come! Just be patient
I would love to give this out for free, it was the first intention. But it would be nice to give up my horrible day job to make cool programs and that means I need money for food, room to live in and electricity for my computer. Sadly that stuff costs money. I can see I will need to make it have a lot more features if I am to ask for money.

You could always just spam it with ads. That's what every other free application does. >_>
I've got a solution for you:
1. Design a killer iPod game
2. Become filthy rich
3. Quit your day job and spend all your time programming AC. By the time the money from the game runs out, AC will be hugely popular and you can start charging for it as well!
Yeah, lots of features... That's the thing about art programs, they need something that sets them apart. Games have graphics and stories and playability and an entertainment factor that makes some worth buying even if so many are free. But how do you compete with the free graphics programs out there? It really has to stand out for something. But you've already got this far, I'm sure you've got plenty of ideas bouncing around up there that will take your program up to the next level.

Killer iPod game eh? I'd have to aim for for the Android market as Apple are pretty anal about their app development and deployment stuff.

XD Wow, what a project. I've thought about attempting a painting program before, but the effort involved never quite seems worth it when you look at all the fully-developed tools available. Very nice work! Looks like you've put this together in Java?

Thanks a lot. And so far I have not found a full on competitor of Open Canvas 1.1. Been wanting to make something like this for 6 years. Its written in C# to be precise.

I haven't heard much about Open Canvas... That's a program that's meant to be closer to traditional drawing, isn't it? I'm poor; I use GIMP. XD
It sounds really ambitious. Whenever I think of drawing programs from a programming standpoint, it makes my head spin. >_> I guess I could figure it out if I sat down and tried, but I haven't tried to yet, heh. It must be fun for you to see this working, though. A step in the right direction! I think it's quite impressive.
I'm not familiar with C#. I know Java, I can fake my way through C++, I've even dabbled in C and assembly a bit, but somehow through all that I gave C# a miss. It's obviously quite similar, though, yes? I'm studying to be a computer science major, so I really need to familiarize myself with a wider variety of languages. XD

C# is like Microsoft's Java. Actully that makes it sound pretty bad
Think of it as managed C++. It makes windows programming a hell of a lot easier. And there is also the XNA framework for game programming
