I got shots like this too. Very hard. I had to crop where then the Megapixels aren't enough. D800 ftw.

Your f was at 22 ruining the fastest time you could get.

I always wondered, haven't tried it yet though with animals (did it with landscapes and the standard overexposed skies), to dial in the speed at 1/1000 and the hope for the best and edit afterwards. Maybe exp at -1 or -2, you can then pull that up in raw to 0.

Yep always a compromise..and the D800 isnt the tool for the job actually,it hasnt the frame rate (only 4fps,not as good as our D90)...if price isnt an issue it would have to be the D4,though the D7000 is more affordable .

Actually, this was on shutter priority,1/400th/iso 320 which gave the best compromise between having sky or trees as a background, allowing me to chase the birds with one setting and still keep the noise down ..if it had been sunnier,i could have gone higher with the shutter speed.
I normally have -.3 dialed in as standard, the problem with shooting raw with fast birds is the small buffer, only 9 frames doesnt give much scope for catching those in-flight shots, even with a fast card,so Falcon displays are jpeg only.

But with 36 MP you don't need many shoots Just hold it in the general direction and crop. Unless you want every stage of it obviously.

I never shoot jpegs anymore. Maybe a mistake. But I like my HDRs now, the normal world has been photographed so often, with millions of DSlrs, pockets and mobile phone cameras. But it obviously sucks if you try to do speed.

Yeah with Sun you don't need fancy cameras, but in Britain the best gear would be cool.

There is that, but things happen so fast that the shot you want is easily missed .
I can see how you need to shoot in RAW for HDR,its horses for courses eh .

We need all the high iso noise control help we can get, good days are outweighed by the dull ones..

I had to zoom in as much as possible (before pixelating beyond discernibility) to find it's head. At first I thought it was headless. But, as previously stated, it is an action photo and sometime total clarity becomes a bit obscure (at least for me). The good thing is that I now know what a Laggar looks like stooping.

Yeah, its not best quality..i can see it ending in scraps .
They look a bit like this [link] though thats a Lanner ..

I think it's mostly the angle you shot from. The Lanner's head shows up a bit better, but I see what you mean .

Sometimes the action taking place just doesn't wait for us to get all the settings just right. Considering all, I think you did pretty good.

I had the cam set to give a compromise between backgrounds, and that is always ajack-of-all-trades situation..

Well, it's definitely different, Martin! At first I had to take a closer look just to determine what it is! Action shots are just that....action! Well, this is action for sure!

I don't know what to tell you....it's unusual and I like it because of that factor.
