WARNING: OLD ART!! The art and comments in this Deviation may no longer represent the artist's current views or interests.

Dump of attempts to design a robot for Maya class. I'm no good with mechanics or "non-organics" in general, but the requirement was hard surfaces. Tried developing ideas from New Cairo, an old OC-thing.

I pretty much didn't like Stargate at all. Because I have my OWN idea of what happens to the gods, and not just the Egyptian ones, No.

I envision Christian heaven located in a gas giant, and the Egyptians on a desert planet populated by alien mummies (similar to those from Ben 10).

This stuff is just awesome, as well!

Stargate ruined your ideas... OH WELL
I really liked Horus by the end of the sketches. It was the best one in my opinion.

Anubis is my favourite, the design looks great. The harvest-bots seem very handy though, any could be approved!

These look wicked awesome! Not very fair that some were rejected for being too much like a series you've never seen. Cool designs, strong silhouettes. I'm a environment/hard surface modeler, so I'm always excited to see awesome robot designs; they're the only way I get be a character artist without having to go organic.

Maya. Maya is wicked. Wicked and awful and calculating. 'What? You haven't saved in an hour? I better crash now.' I would gleefully burn an effigy of Maya and dance around it.

Interesting parameters for an assignment. Even with the concerns of that Stargate issue, I still like your take on it. These have more of an animalistic form versus the drab man in a robot suit kinda feel.

When I saw this, I immediately thought "STARGATE"! And then I saw that you pointed that out. XD

These designs are amazing. You draw everything so well. Gah~
I looove the poses and the detail you put into them. Amazing work!

I never watched too far into Stargate, so I dunno about the Egypto-bots, but its still a very fun concept. What jumped immediately into my mind was the Otherland book series, since the villains portray themselves as the Egyptian gods and goddesses <3

Otherland! I'm currently making my way through that fantastic world for the second time. Tad Williams is a genius.

Tell me about it! I recently did my second read-through, and its still just as striking the second time through. His books are pretty amazing, they always manage to suck me in.

Yeah, that always impressed me too. Most books you get blah and start flipping ahead, but he managed to keep a really great pace. Hurray for Tad Williams

Yay! You really should watch some Stargate. Jack O'Neill is hilarious. Especially in the episode "1969." Stargate Atlantis is pretty funny, too, with Rodney McKay, king of sarcasm and ego. My favorite Stargate villains/anti-heroes are Ba'al, a Goa'uld system lord, and Todd the Wraith. I think you'd like them, too.

I haven't seen the original movie. But I love the series. The characters are sarcastic and hilarious.

The same is true for MASH. Haven't seen that movie, either, but I love the series.

I really like the drawings! I love the concept of the Thot robot . I had an idea: Try to draw it with a steampunk style, maybe more stylized. Imagine it like an victorian automaton...(gosh...I find so hard to write in english X.X)

quartervirus-archive In reply to LarissaRivero [2011-01-21 10:04:47 +0000 UTC]

Oh gosh, but Steampunk robotics generally shows a lot of cogs and wheels. This is my first year trying Maya and I'm no good at it, not only that but the reason there is so little Steampunk stuff in my gallery in general is because I can't wrap my head around how machinery and cogs work in the first place.

I'm glad I don't take computer classes. I couldn't do things like this.
Especially since you said your designs (which are awesome) were rejected because of something you've never watched.
How are you supposed to know that something exists already if you've never seen it?
I'm happy with a 4 hour painting/drawing class even if I get so tired I nearly fall off the stool.

My favorite one is the accordion/music-box-bot. It's cute.
Also Egyptian mythology =

Ye~ah, I did think that some of these sketches looked like horus guard armor from Stargate ... xD

Nice work though. I tried 3D modeling some years ago, must say that I suffer with you on that one ...

Love the robot designs.

As for Stargate...it is primarily because you are using Horus and Anubis. The primary masks in the movie and series were of that design more often than not.

ArtofARoman [2011-01-20 18:22:12 +0000 UTC]

Nice work! I like your silhouette thought process. And yeah, some of them may be Star-gate-ey but many of them are not. And besides, I think your concepts approve on the designs anyway BD
I hated drawing robots/armor at first as well but once I realized that the majority of bots/armor are just basic human shapes with moar lines (and SHINIES), then they stopped being so scary.

I personally like your crazy monkey thing I am sad he got rejected because of being 'too simple' (I think that is a deceptive statement). I would have called him Frank. <3

But your hunched AnuBot will work really well.
Do you have to rig these when you're done building? o.O

If this is your first Maya-type class I feel for you.

quartervirus-archive In reply to ArtofARoman [2011-01-21 10:01:59 +0000 UTC]

The monkey thing is a little more interesting than your usual Egyptian bots, but I think I'd have gotten tired of it too quickly. I wanted to do Ancient Egypt because it's something I love, so the drive to do well will be there despite my general dislike and incompetence at Maya. Our first project was to render the outside of a shop-house based on a Photo and mine was less than spectacular. It's not my "first" class with Maya (second semester) but as of year two I'll be ditching 3D and focusing on 2D animation.

ArtofARoman In reply to quartervirus-archive [2011-01-22 00:31:31 +0000 UTC]

Well that's good. I know I struggled in my 3d class. Sometimes they like throwing you to the wolves. And it also makes my heart happy you have the option to branch into 2d after you get this done. My school (Art institute of Vancouver) was pure 3D when I attended. I clung to my 2d animation classes like it was oxygen.

It's pain in the ass, but It's a skill I'm glad to have-as basic as it may be.

Best of luck, eh? :3

Oh animation is always getting thrown into the deep end, as I've discovered. A lot of my classmates want to pursue 3D animation next year, but I'm sticking by my guns. I've wanted to be able to animate 2D since I was a kid growing up with Disney.

LASALLE is just starting to get known for its animation program. It doesn't have the funding of bigger polytechnics in Singapore but the teaching is far superior. Our head of animation is an animator of 30 years who then went on to study Maya and Flash himself. Most of our teachers for video editing, Maya, and otherwise save Flash were students of his several years ago. I'm amazed at what he's managed to accomplish in such a short time; apparently animation was a mess before his arrival.
