i.

No matter how many times the world
says to “be yourself”
it will never accept you
when you are.

ii.

You’re on your own. Always.

iii.

Admit to yourself that you lie.
You don’t have to make it
a point of conversation with others
because most will not understand
nor love you regardless,
even though they do it too,
but admitting it to yourself
opens the door for growth and that
is very important.

iv.

There will be a boy who you find
sitting next to you in a library one day
and he’ll eventually ask you to do something.
Say no.

v.

The road to hell may be paved with good intentions
but remember
it’s better to do the wrong thing
than to do the right thing with your heart
not in the right place.

vi.

Learn to laugh more.
Life is much more bearable.

vii.

Don’t blame society for all your problems.

viii.

Don’t blame yourself for all your problems.

ix.

Don’t apologize for everything.
This is neither attractive nor healthy;
it makes you feel like the weight of the world
is on your shoulders and other people
will take advantage of you.

x.

There is no such thing as security—
there is only freedom
or the lack thereof.

xi.

You’ll learn someday that envy is your worst sin.
Be careful, or it will lose you some of the best friendships
you ever had and leave you cold and empty.

xii.

You will have unpopular opinions
and as much as society will yell “believe what you want!”
some of these opinions will be met with
shock, anger, and even disgust,
which will hurt you tremendously because
like it or not, you’re a sensitive person.
Hold these opinions anyway.

xiii.

Your parents had no clue how to raise you.
They were young and carrying a lot of baggage.
Don’t resent them for this.

xiv.

People aren’t meant to be idolized,
they’re meant to be loved for the imperfect
creatures that they are.

xv.

You will come to discover that at your core
you are very insecure.
You will not like this discovery
but making it will be a reward
because in many ways it will free you.

xvi.

The world does not owe you anything.

xvii.

You do not owe the world anything.

xviii.

When your grandmother calls you
from across the country, take the time to talk to her.
One day you won’t get to.

xix.

There will be a girl
who you’ll love but also hate
because she stays by your side but calls you out
on your bullshit. Have the guts
to admit that she’s right
and don’t sabotage yourself just to spite her.
You’ll hurt yourself more than anything.

xx.

Don’t have faith in humanity.
Have faith in individuals.

xxi.

Don’t worry about not having answers. No one does.
To stumble from moment to moment is to live.

xxii.

Most of your pleasures will be guilty pleasures.
I’m afraid that’s just the way you’re wired.

xxiii.

Contrary to common belief,
“true love” does not exist.
To say that there is “true love” is to imply
that there is “false love” and that’s not how love works.
Love is either present or it's not.

xxiv.

Neither doubt nor faith are curses.
Both are gifts.

xxv.

You're a hypocrite, just like everyone else.

xxvi.

Fear is not your enemy. Without it,
there is nothing to overcome
and therefore
no courage.

xxvii.

It’s okay to be happy.
It’s okay not to be.

xxviii.

Peace will never exist in the world around you;
you have to find it inside yourself.
This is the hardest thing you will ever attempt
because it means coming to terms with yourself.

xxix.

People don’t want to see you succeed in anything,
because when they see you succeed
they feel like they’ve failed.

xxx.

You are not materialistic. Embrace this quality
and hold it close because it’s precious.
When your best friend in high school does your makeup
and your first boyfriend in college tells you to get better shoes
don’t let this make you feel inadequate.

xxxi.

Despite all those pep talks
the truth is, things don’t always work out.
There is no rule in real life that says everything
will be okay in the end.

xxxii.

It’s okay to not be strong.
The heart can only take so much,
then it’s had enough.
Always remember to allow
your heart the time to heal.

xxxiii.

Some people will encourage you
to change; others will encourage you
not to. Change is a crucial part of life,
but everyone changes in their own time and way.
Change as you need to, not as others
tell you to.

xxxiv.

Everyone is looking for something. Including you.
Root for them. And for yourself.

I want to savour it, but it hurts to read it. Like, "How did you know?" "Why are there so many things so similar?"

We, as people, aren't so different after all.

Makosuke [2014-06-05 10:23:19 +0000 UTC]

"You're on your own, always."

This may well be true for your journey through life, or has been thus far.  But I feel possessed to note that the most difficult lesson I personally have learned in life was the opposite.

In my case, after spending a year bedridden on the brink of death, staring mortality down every waking moment in a constant battle against my own failing body and the overpowering suffering it was inflicting on me, the greatest lesson I learned was that I could not do it alone. However strong I thought I was, however hard I fought, without the unconditional support I received, I would be dead. Not might be, would be.

Physically, without question.  But even mentally, there was a breaking point, a point of despair, in which the only light was a loved one sensing something was wrong--she couldn't have heard the silent tears from the other room, but came to hold me anyway. Without her, and a dozen other people--some of whom I had never even met--giving of themselves without asking or expecting anything in return, I would not be typing this.

As someone who believed in his ability to overcome any obstacle, it was not easy for me to accept that there are some which I simply cannot without the pure generosity of others.

Again, that may not have been your life experience, but your particular nugget of hard-earned wisdom does not necessarily apply to everyone.

I might rephrase it as, "You can't count on anyone but yourself, but sometimes you will have to."

QuirkyCuriousBex In reply to Makosuke [2014-06-07 21:30:54 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that was… quite a story. First, I would like to thank you for sharing it, and second, I would like to say I’m sorry you went through such an ordeal but am very happy you came out of it.

The advice was intended for me only. It may or may not resonate with others and I’m perfectly accepting of that.

You have a point. We rely on each other all the time and we have to, if you think about it, in order to have a functional society. We rely on police to apprehend criminals, doctors to diagnose and treat us, teachers to instruct us, family to give us love and support… the list goes on and on. I have a heart condition and rely on my cardiologist’s expertise all the time. It’s a double-edged sword, I think, because as much as we need to rely on others to thrive, there’s no guarantee that they can be relied upon. People are unreliable (for a variety of reasons), and anything could happen at any time. Where you had people there for you when you faced death, others die alone with nothing and no one. Others also pull through with nothing and no one. I find it’s best not to assume the help of others. Hope for it, and be grateful when it’s given, but be prepared – as prepared as you can be – to face things alone. "I'm on my own" may not be the most optimistic viewpoint, and it may not apply to all circumstances (and when you get down to it, what viewpoint does apply to all circumstances? I don't think there are many), but from what I've seen, it's the healthiest way to be. After all, it’s not like others can experience what you’re experiencing for you. Even if they do everything within their power to help in any way they can, they do not live in your head and cannot force you to do or feel anything, and so in that way you are on your own.

(By the way, sorry for the late reply. These last few days have been hectic.)
