It was totally counter to the game's goal. It was the exact opposite of what Shepard and the entire galaxy had been fighting for. I think that was the point. No matter how mad you bungle up Shepard's journey, you can always still get through, then if worst comes to worst, Liara still gives the galaxy of the future hope. Synthesis is your one and only chance to lose the game completely. The onand only chance to fall to indoctrination and hand an enslaved galaxy over to the Reapers.

She created highly detailed data pods with a history of the war and the reapers and the crucible data for future archaeologists to find. Like the Prothean's beacon but better. Basically, she assured that even if the war was (militarily) lost, the (knowledge) gains they had made towards a future victory would not be lost.
