SEPTEMBER 1998 - B'S "OFFICE"

B - "A six-story brownhouse just two blocks down Graves Street?"

H - "Correct!"

B - "Twenty-four apartments in total -- just for the two of you?"

D - "Yup!"

B - "And how many centuries will it take to pay it all? And let's not forget about the property taxes."

D - "Oh, come on, little Miss Party-Pooper! Do you think we would have bought it if we weren't sure we could afford it?"

H - "Yeah, that building was the greatest bargain I'd ever seen. Had I left that auction without its property documents, I would've felt like the biggest fool in the state."

B - "You don't say -- and how great would this history-making bargain be, exactly?"

H - *whispers in her friend's ear*

B - "Th-that's less than I paid to ensure unimpeded access to every floor of this tower!"

D - "Told ya that that guy was scamming you!"

B - "Ok, I admit I underestimated the power of an auction with no bids. Still, won't a huge building with only two persons living there attract more attentions than you two should be comfortable with?"

D - "Are you kidding? Have you ever even been to Gorfinkel Street? It's a serious competitor for deadest place in all of Downtown. I bet my jacket that the only person who'll notice that the building's population has gone from 0 to 2 is going to be the postman. We're much more at risk staying in our current apartment. I swear I saw Mrs. Dominczyk fromacross the street spying on us with a telescope last Tuesday."

H - "She's right. Let alone that the new place would be in a very convenient location. Last night I visited the roofs of the adjacent buildings -- and of every building from there to here. We can get out of our new home without anybody noticing us and follow a path on the roofs that can take us to the secret entrance on the south side of the tower with very little chance of somebody noticing us."

B - "Serious? Hmmmm... You know what? Perhaps moving to that place is the right thing to do."

D (to H) - "See? I told you that she would've loved it eventually!"

B - "So, when will you be ready to show me the Nest?"

D/H - "'Nest'?"

B - "Well, you're the Birds and also lovebirds--"

D - *groans*

B - "-- it makes sense that you set up your little nest."

D/H - "..."

B - "Girls?"

D - "I'm not going to call our beautiful new home 'Nest'. Sorry."

B - "Ok, ok, that was only a suggestion. Still, I think a familiar name would serve that apartment block well. It would also double as a useful codename during conversations."

H - "Theeeere goes Ms. Paranoia! I've heard worse advice than this, though. Oh, well, I'm sure we'll have come up with something by the time we finish moving."

Ooooookay, maybe this one didn't actually deserve to be its own deviation, since it's a tad light on actual content. On the other hand, I really wanted to include some acknowledgements to the people who helped me throughout the development of this series with their advice and opinions. I'm talking about:

for his words of encoragement and being able to understand what the hell I was writing about,

for his commendable beta-reading marathon and his perspective observations,

for making me realize why I got myself involved in this endeavour,

for lending her point of view on matters which I couldn't have settled otherwise.
