Description
This gryphon, once again featuring a parrot hybridization, is from a couple of years ago. His shoulder is off. Yes, I see that. It drives me crazy, too.I didn't want to use a spotted cat as his hindquarters this time, so I chose one of the stripy guys instead. What? They come from opposite ends of the Earth, you say? Oh WOW! Some foreign exchange student was feeling particularly creative...
I almost like the background more than the beastie. I created it with watercolor and salt (then I tipped the illustration board back and forth to get those oblong shapes), then I enhanced the effect with colored pencil. The gryphon and his perch were drawn with colored pencil.

Thanks! I love doing these kinds of backgrounds - the overall effect is very different when it's a small piece like this (it's only 7x10 inches or so) - you can see the detail created by the salt much more clearly here than in the big pieces on which I've used a similar technique.

Why on Earth has that not occurred to me already...?
I hadn't considered an octoparrot yet, but I will now. It could work with an eight-wing system, with tentacles, with its beak wrong-side-up... There are quite a few interesting possibilities!
I love the way your mind works...

Have you seen the episode of the Simpsons where Homer had brain surgery to improve his IQ?
"You want us to play God, Mr Simpson?"
"You do nothing BUT play God, and your Octoparrot would agree with me..."
"Polly shouldn't be!"
