Description From 2010

This is a painting I did on a course that was about color and color as a material, and it taught me a lot. I found many new ways to break away from old habits that had been restraining me for a long time. I think this shows in this painting.

The idea came to me when I was listening to Katatonia's new amazing album Night is the New Day, on the last track Departer there's this absolutely heart-stopping part:

" Brother
In your eyes I was the stronger
So how am I to cover you now
Without shadowing your path "

Beautiful and soft work. I think it's great how your work can be inverted in to a lighter color and tonal scheme, and still it looks specifically your own. I distinctly applaud the light and shadow work on this piece. There's a very nice stroke of light highlighting on the forms that I find very pleasing to observe.

I have a soft spot for the character type, possibly because I see myself in it a little. But above and beyond; I think you are taking a very interesting direction. And even though some have brought it up as a negative observation - I find the some-what distorted limbs very suiting with the overall theme of the piece. I think there's no reason to discern whether or not you are creating anatomically correct figures... It's not the point, not in my mind.

Thank you for sharing. Kiitos!

It's too rare to get real feedback like this, kiitos itsellesi.

And about the anatomy question, I agree with you that the anatomical correctness of especially the larger figure is not relevant with what I'm trying to communicate here, really. But I feel that maybe it could be even more obvious than it isn't supposed to be a physical creature - I hope you can understand what I'm thinking. Maybe through even rougher brushstrokes and making the larger figure even more sketchy I could make it clear to people that it shouldn't necessarily be viewed as something that's "real". We'll see where it goes.

Ole hyva! Hyvat tyot tarvitsevat huomiota. Kirjoitan mielellani englanniksi, koska se on nykyisin ensimmainen kieleni ja minusta on hyva tehda kommentit myos muille kuin suomalaisille luettaviksi... Pieni keskustelu avaa aina toita pikkasen enemman.

I understand what you are saying, and I saw it very well in the piece. I think your idea to make it more sketchy is an excellent thing to try. Perhaps you could even break the figure down to something totally abstract ... but I'm not sure if that would break the narrative you are going for and distract from the human plight/conflict in the work. I also have to say that formative detail in the face of the ... I want to say "protagonist" ... along with the focal (sharp to blurry, kind of like a photograph) technique serves your idea really well.

I like the play with the big brother and what large things create; both literal and abstract. Large things cast large shadows.

My second take on this makes me want to say this is the same personification in two different forms.

I'm glad you noticed the focal thinking in this piece, I'm a big fan of works (not just paintings) that play with highly focused and very blurred, and wish to bring that more into my own paintings. Maybe with leaving some parts even more roughly painted that will be more visible. All in all your views confirm somewhat what I've been wondering by myself, that I should push these things (the focal thinking, and the use of different brushstrokes etc.) a little harder.
Actually, I have one unfinished painting that has these two figures sort of merged, so the thought of them being just one entity in two forms isn't that far fetched at all.

Tosiaan hieman "uutta" tyyliä havaittavissa, mutta joka tapauksessa hienoa jälkeä. Hujopin toinen jalka on vähän... "vempula" mutta muutoin tykkään jäljestä. Taas sitä mistä tykkään: vähillä vedoilla todella elävää jälkeä.
Saisit kirjoitella enemmän noihin aikasempiin töihis taustatietoja inspiraation lähteistä ja sellasista, niitä on aina mielenkiintosta lukea ja ne aianakin meikäläiselle avaa sitä työtä huomattavasti.

Thank you, I'm glad you think it works with the lyrics, I wasn't sure wether or not I should post them here.
