Description 11x14" scratchboard with colored inks. It is based on a photograph I took at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. This was my first try coloring scratchboard and it was kind of an adventure! I used Winsor & Newton drawing inks first but didn't like them, so I switched to Liquitex drawing ink halfway through and liked that much better.

I gave the original to my great aunt for her 100th birthday in early October 2009. Prints are available (note me.)

OH,,MY..

this is beautiful!

One (slight silly) question though.. what exactly is "colouring scratchboard?"

rah-bop In reply to Selina-Mei [2009-10-24 18:52:21 +0000 UTC]

That's not a silly question at all.

Scratchboard is made with a piece of masonite (hard wooden board) that has been coated with a layer of white clay, and then coated again with black ink. You use the tip of a knife (or other pointy objects) to scratch through the black ink to reveal white clay. After I scratched my picture out, I painted the white parts with transparent inks to give it color. I've done scratchboards before, but this was my first time taking that next step and adding color to it.

ohh woww!

So it has texture to it?

So you can only use one once.. just as you get once canvas, paint it and thats the work?

Coooool.. ! May try it someday.. x

rah-bop In reply to Selina-Mei [2009-11-03 06:46:55 +0000 UTC]

The texture isn't hugely apparent, but you can see it if you look closely.

Yep. Once you use it, you can't use it again... like most materials, I think? (Except digital)

It's a pretty fun medium!

Not really! It was my first time using inks and I had no clue what I was doing. D: I think it turned out this well by accident.

Wow beautifully done! And congrats to your Aunt for her 100th birthday! Did your Aunt get the royal treatment from the president? I hear everybody who reaches 100 gets something from the president.

rah-bop In reply to RaptorArts [2009-10-24 08:31:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, she lives in New Zealand, so she didn't get anything from the US president, no. But she did get a card from Queen Elizabeth and one from John Key, the prime minister of NZ, lol.

Wow very cool! Much better to get it from a Queen than the U.S. prez.. I'm sure were totally screwed with our messed up government and its bureaucrats. I wonder if theres room in New Zealand or Cannada for an American refugee? LOL XD

How did you apply the inks? I bought some spare scratchboards a while back but haven't used them because I don't know what to do with them yet, but this is kind of sparking some more interest...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rah-bop In reply to RacieB [2009-10-24 06:16:05 +0000 UTC]

I just painted them on with a paintbrush. The inks I was using were transparent, so they only showed up on the white parts.
