Alright, I've been preparing for this comment for almost two days, thinking over everything about what I want to say. There's no way out, I must comment this comic or I will implode and explode at the same time, immediately
I'm glad someone eventually raised this topic. I mean, people pay attention only to the characters that appeared in the game, but often ignore the others that took their little part (in my personal opinion - GIANT) in the plot, too. They're simply forgotten for its being a background fillers. That's a bit unfair, especially when the character of Doug Rattmann deserves as much attention as GlaDOS or Wheatley. After all, he was the one who allowed us to play Portal2, through saving Chell... no, don't look at me like that xD I know what I am talking about – VALVe were indeed a genius (or had suckers luck). They made a character that could smoothly bound both games, but unfortunately, they didn't exploit his potential to the very last end. Duh.
I like when videogame offers something more than just playing...
I was thinking about Doug's personality and the story behind it, and... well, just seeing this guy makes me feel kind of bad. And down. Because somehow I can understand him. It sure is hard to pretend everything's all right with you, especially when you must fight difficulties on your own, without any helping hand. However, I think it was his choice to be alone (I believe he IS alone). People having major health problems or suffering from any disability often decides not to raise a family (I assume his illness is genetic), it is (well, may be) a natural/biological reaction. And schizophrenia is a serious thing. I feel Doug is aware of that.
The only thing that has any chance to cure him, is science. That's why he is a scientist, with the profession in personalities. His own is broken.
… hu-uh, that was a few words from me.
But above all!
I really want you to continue, I'd be pleased to see your point of view through this comic ;A;
Sooo... pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease *falls down on knees*

You are so awesome! ;w; Thank you very much for this wonderful comment!
And I agree with you on all possible levels!
Schizophrenia is truly genetic but can also be caused by various stuff in life. The chance that a schizophrenic parrent will have a child with the same problem is almost 100 percent So yes, I think that Douglas has a very good and kind heart - the LAb Rat comic has striken me very deeply... He literally sacrificed himself. And I too think he wasn't planning family or simple life, he truly worked as a man of science and dedicated himself to his work. In the Lab rat comic he had a book about art-therapy somewhere, I think it was a very nice detail showing that he isn't giving up on life and wants to surpress his illness by any means possible...with medicaments but also with work and even with his hobby. Maybe I am thinking way too deeply about a fictional character but ... I bet someone very similar to him may exist in this world and maybe even many others, who suffer like that but fight like him. Just the thought of someone who is alone, on his own, thrown in a dangerous environment, trying to survive and fighting against his inner demons at the same time...illness, voices.... And making such hard choices as he did - it's just too much to just ignore or think about it as "filler", for, as you said splendidly - Rattman was actually THE ONE who alloud "us to play Portal" - which is absolutely true X'D If it weren't for his character, Chell wouldn't have escaped in the first game (because he was leading her with the scribbles). She wouldn't have survived (as shown in the Lab Rat comic) and she wouldn't be able to fight (because she would be dead....).
I am sure Valve knows this and is fully aware of that. That's why they dedicated even a comic to this topic and character.... I am sure he will be seen and his story will be ended properly, maybe some other time...maybe in some crossover with Half life...maybe in the future if Portal 3 will ever be released.
I think that even Chell is a very shadowy person, with too many things unclear about her. I am curious to know what it is...
And don't worry, I'll DEFINITELY finish this comic. I already did the half of the story. I also needed to release the pressure of questions in my head and dedicate at least something to them.
Thank you once again very much for the comment

My suspicions that Portal fans think in exactly same way, proved correct
I also agree with you in case of Chell, I'm curious too. We know about her almost nothing, and cannot be even sure about informations that give us Wheatley or GLaDOS, since... it was highly possible they could have LIED. Valve got rid of the problem with speaking Chell by making her brain damaged. It was really well-aimed, but... somehow frustrating, too. Because in which way will she be NOW albe to communicate? And how serious was her damage really? (not able to talk [and jumping instead], but able to risk and fight robots and get it successfull and survive being few seconds in space without oxygen and... WHOA, wat o-o ) Valve guys need to specify her. And every other human character. THEY MUST, fandom needs information >:I
That's funny, but I can admit this game taught me a lesson... to NEVER EVER trusting Artificial Intelligence xD

I think the brain damage was just a pun
A talking character in such a game would be probably more of a burden...and many people, including me, think, that Chell simply doesn't talk because she doesn't want to give the AI a chance to catch her off-guard or to risk getting tangled into a dangerous discussion.
Even Rattman in the Lab Rat comic refused to answer GLaDOS and talk to her, even though she insulted him and tried to manipulate him. I guess Chell would be doing the best thing with not speaking with any of the AI....so she wouldn't get manipulated as well and give them additional information on her personality...(at least I think it's the best thing..But first of all, I guess the creators simply didn't want to confuse ppl with too deep plotline X'D idk maybe they didn't expect Portal to become such a hit).
And indeed....NEVER EVER trust AI X'D
