"When we were kids we always had the cutest nicknames for each other"

Sweet memories filled Roberto's head. When they were young, he and Jewel would spend all the time together, playing, flying and having fun.
"Hey Jewel!" Roberto greeted one day "Wanna fly across the waterfall?"
"We were there yesterday" she said. "Don't you prefer to stay here? The flowers are blooming already!"
"Haha, you and your flowers" he chuckled "OK, you win. We will see the flowers, but tomorrow we'll go to the waterfall!"
"I promise" Jewel replied, rolling her eyes laughingly.
The two macaws began to clamber up between the wide branches, using their beaks and talons. Roberto was behind Jewel, they crossed some giant leaves when the male macaw asked:
"Jewel, I was thinking... We're best friends and... best friends deserves best nicknames"
"Is that so? You truly need one. Roberto is kinda a long name to repeat over and over again" she giggled "I think I am gonna call you 'Beto' from today on" she added.
"Beto? Suena bien!" the male macaw said cheerfully "And you, you will be 'Ju-Ju'!" he pointed at Jewel with his feathers, like if his decision was really that relevant.
"Ju-Ju? That's my nickname?" she stopped, raising one eyebrow, a challenging expression on her face.
"Sí, maybe is not very obvious, but I think is really cute. And it suits you, Ju-Ju" he said charmingly.
"Oh Beto... Haha, I like it! How did you come up with it?"
"Well, I... I think you look like either Jewel or Ju-Ju. I couldn't imagine any other macaw nicknamed Ju-Ju except you" he tried to look serious while explaying his pick, but when Jewel burst with loud laughter, he couldn't help but laugh too...

Now, Roberto thought their nicknames sounded a bit old-fashioned, even childish. He was afraid Jewel had changed. Was she still the funny girl he used to know? Did she still remember those childhood memories like he did? He didn't know for sure, however, it was a great relief for Roberto when he heard Jewel saying:
"We did, I called him Beto!"

Beyond doubt, his friend had returned.

I really like Jewel and Roberto's friendship, although I don't ship them. I think Roberto could have a crush on Jewel when they were young, but currently she only loves Blu and Roberto is fully aware of it.
However, I love to imagine how their relationship used to be and how they came up with their own nicks. My theory isn't really original, but I wanted to draw these two as youngsters (they are a bit older than the triplets in RIO 2), and yep, Roberto looks indeed very big for his age Let's say he grown up well.

About Roberto's speaking: In the movie, he's able to speak Spanish, so I wrote some things in spanish. "Suena bien" = It sounds cool / Sí = Yes.

Fun fact #1: Roberto has spiky feathers on his neck like Tiago, because it seems it's trait of development in young macaws.
Fun fact #2: In Spanish, Jewel was renamed 'Perla' ('pearl') and thus her nickname was "LaLa".
