Getting the color to be just right can be frustrating, and is definitely a major issue in painting.
I will often start a new piece grayscale and layout a semi-decent composition, adding color in later using overlay, soft light  or hard light.  The process can seem a little longer, but you can save a great deal of time dialing the colors in.
The final step would be to purify the color scheme by painting (on a new layer above the rest) areas where the greyscale background and color layers are reacting unpleasantly.

Everyone has a different method.  You might try this out on one of your sketch pieces (if you haven't before) and see how it works for you!

thank you, I was well aware of the gray scale method but i really didn't know what effects to use to get out of the gray scale step. ill definitely mess around with this method on my next piece.
