So my Game of 2022 is back for an encore performance. While it does certainly deliver in a lot of areas, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge - Dimension Shellshock feels like there could have been room for more content. Oh sure, it has new characters, skins, winks, nods and more fan service than an ecchi anime, I feel there could have been a much meatier second campaign and a few more surprises.
Let's go over the small details first. All the characters have been given new skins based on the various TMNT incarnations over the years; Meaning you can rock the Turtles, Splinter, April and Casey in skins based on the 1990s movie, the badass 2003 cartoon, the sensational 2012 cgi series and unfortunately the Rise of the TMNT show. I will say this does leave the buffet bar a little dry for any potential DLC down the road because what the fuck can you even reference at this point? Skins based on the Next Mutation, the 2007 movie or, God forbid, the Michael Bay films? Though I wouldn't say no to a reference to the obscure TMNT anime from the 90s. That shit was fucking weird and I loved it.
Speaking of “the land of the rising sun”, the DLC also includes two brand new characters to play across both story campaigns. Miyamoto Usagi is a guest character and something of a long-time collaboration between the Turtles franchise and the Manga series, Usagi Yojimbo. He’s appeared in various TMNT cartoons before and I’m glad he’s returned for this game. In terms of his overall gameplay, Usagi plays like a slower but heavier Leonardo who only has one sword, but an impressive aerial game. While I did enjoy my time with this character, I think I prefer the other characters over him; mainly because his special move doesn’t cover as much ground.
But the absolute show stealer of this DLC is the inclusion of the first villain/anti-hero character in the lineup: Shredder’s own daughter, Karai. In fact, I kind of called this in the initial review of the game, when I was hoping either Karai or Tatsu would show up. I guess the Fates decided to throw me a bone? All I'm saying is if Shredder’s Revenge 2 ever happens, Tatsu better fucking be in it! It's also interesting to see her included because, outside of that Tournament Fighters game, Karai’s never really interacted with the 1987 version of the Turtles before. Looking at her character model, it's clearly based on the 2003 incarnation (while I suspect the colour palette is based on the final season and Turtles Forever).
Karai feels like a mixture of April’s speed and Splinter’s hard hitting combos. Out of the two DLC characters, she’s an absolute beast and broken as fuck with her wide range of combos and ridiculous special moves. Can you tell that her moves were based on the fighting game, because this bitch has got combos for days. As I mentioned earlier, you can use both Usagi and Karai in the main story campaign, as well as the secondary story mode: The Dimension Shellshock.
I say there's a story attached to this thing, but it’s so flimsy it should double as a porn script. Cliff notes version: the Neutrinos hire you to travel across various universes to collect crystals to stop Shredder from destroying the multiverse. It seems even the Ninja Turtles can't escape this fucking comic book movie trend at the moment. However, unlike the MCU's long delayed suicide, this multiverse trip doesn’t overstay its welcome, with five different worlds to explore that contain a few decent references to the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Mirage comic book series, Usagi's universe and even ‘the red sky’ seasons of TMNT. Why you'd reference that last one is beyond me because nobody liked that tryhard horseshit and its blatant attempts to compete (and lose) to the Power Rangers back in the 90s.
As you progress through the multiverse, you can equip various perks to change up the experience. These range from buffs, health and even transforming into Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady. As fun as that last one sounds, you're better off praying the video game Gods they bestow you with pizza and nothing else!
The real letdown of this experience is the final boss: The Void Shredder, who is just a recoloured Super Shredder and even easier than before. By that I mean you can now freely attack him without waiting for his cooldown phase. He does briefly summon shadowclones of various bosses, but they're easier to dodge than Biden answering questions about the US economy.
On the surface, it might sound like a cakewalk to go through five different universes to reach the Void Shredder, but the challenge is difficult from the start as you need to re-level your characters up again and this mode only comes with one difficulty option. I hope you enjoy seeing that game over screen, because this mode will kick you in the ass harder than AEW did to CM Punk.
(Conclusion)
Does this new mode give Shredder’s Revenge a bit more shelf life? Unfortunately, the answer is no. We played this for a weekend and I'm already moving on to the new Pokemon DLC coming out tomorrow (at time of editing). It's a good way to kill a few hours, but nothing you'll be spending an entire weekend on.
Dimension Shellshock is a good survival mode add-on and I enjoyed the time I spent with it, but I kind of wish it had more than just five worlds to explore. I highly doubt we're gonna get another batch of DLC for this game, but if they’re looking for suggestions, then maybe include the Last Ronin as an unlockable character? Or why not splurge on some guest stars, like the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers or Batman.
Tell me you wouldn't want to recreate a rematch of Shredder and Batman using this game? Think about it, people. Think about it.
