Let me know what you like or dont like etc as this will be the first of many

Naomi, can you tell which side of the paper you use. With black paper you can see that one side is a bit less black and a bit more rough than the other side.

hey there i checked and i use the smoothest side I would probably use the rougher side if that texture suited the drawing i was going to do to give a rougher look.. but for finer detail i would want the smoothest surface possible.. I like stonehenge as you can build up a lot of layers.. and this is how i like to work, esp with colour pencil.. I find the more light layers you can put in the more realistic your work will look.. I wiork very light esp in the eye areas .. Feel free to ask me any more questions as more than happy to help no point reinventing the wheel!

Thank you very much for answering that question.
I only recently noticed the difference on the two sides.
Yes Stonehenge paper is fantastic.

So with colour pencils you start with the light colours and build it up too darker? (when working on black paper)
I alsways used pastels and with pastels it's the other way around.

ha ha its funny you ask this.. I want to do an animal in pastel and i always struggle cause i try to do it the same way i do colour pencil.. i really need to find myself a good tutorial to get me started i think!
with colour pencil i always work from light to dark.. you cant put light colours over dark, though funnily enough black paper is a bit more forgiving and you can put touch up of lighter colours over dark.. but you cant on the lighter papers..
This means that you have to plan your drawing out well esp on white paper..
With black paper and some other coloured paper, you need to do a layer of white first so that the colour underneath does not change the colour of your pencil. For example if i didnt put white under yellow pencil on black paper it would have a green tinge..

Haha, that's indeed funny.
Yes with pastels always lay down a light layer of the dark colour en build it up slowly with little strokes of a lighter colour, at last add the whites to make your drawing 'pop'.
You use the flat side of a pastel to lay down that first layer.
Velours paper is the best in my opinion especially when you draw animals.
I use a plastic glove (like a dentist glove) that way your fingers stay a bit cleaner.(Heard that idea from someone else)
If you have the time google Lesley Harrison, she makes fantastic pastels.
She also wrote a book about it, it's called : Painting Animals that touch the heart.
I've learned a lot from that. :iconncheerplz:
And thanks for telling me about the colour pencils you're very good with that medium.

I will, I started drawing the same tiger a few times, on black and light Stonehenge, on canvas and I want to do one with pastels. That's the only way to see which one I like most.
I followed your instructions about drawing on black paper and it's going nicely.
Have you ever tried drawing on canvas? You have to use a lot of pressure and it kind of smudges easily but the end result is nice.

awesome im glad your tiger is coming along well I have not tried canvas yet.. but was intrigued after seeing Bleuies work.. will be the opposite to how i work as i tend to work very lightly

Yes it was Bleuies work that inspired me too .
Can tell you that I like working on paper better than on canvas.

hmm... well i went right away, and im not sure if it helps me.... i guess it does...
im not quite at this stage yet, but i will fight to get there...
i think i struggle more with outlining and getting it to look like a tiger, before not being able to shade the fur etc...

Thanks for this; I was having a REALLY hard time trying to find tiger tutorials, and this one is in colour pencil ALSO!!!

A question if you're not too busy to answer: Do you know where I could get some good tiger marking reference?

It'd be a great help!

this is really a great tutorial. it'd take a hell of a lot of practice to accomplish that kind of result, and of course personalizing your own way of doing things. you have a wonderful style, but i have to ask... where in the world do you find this different type of paper. i must be out of the loop, or perhaps i bypass these items because the price scares me. i dunno, but i've never seen stone henge paper. hmm.. nor have i seen a lot of other paper materials. any suggestions where i could find it?

Hi there and thankyou for all your comments the paper i use exclusively for colour pencil is stonehenge.. i have used others but none come anywhere near this paper.. it suits me becuase you can do a lot of details and helps me to get the soft but detaild look... I noticed you are in America so it will be even easier to get the paper i import everything from America because you cant get in in Australia and on the rare chance you can its 5 x the price... here is the link [link] i get my pencils etc from here as well.. if you have never been to dickblick before online watch out lol you will buy way too much lol

Your work is amazing... I'm going to go look at more... I have to get my hands on some professional coloring pencils... I'm getting tired of mine breaking all the freaking time, and perhaps the new ones would be more protected by a case! Good Job

thankyou for all your great comments... artist pencils esp prismas because they are softer still have a tendency to break.. i find using an electric sharpener minimises this though... if you are going to invest in some .. my recommendation would be the prismas they are beautiful.. you can sometimes get them for a bargain on ebay

Thank you. I'll have to look for some of those. Are there lots of different colors? Right now I only have around 60 maybe... I'm not sure, it's just a cheap pack from school a while back... Roseart... (really cheap) *Laughs*

it's amazing how the piece simply comes to life. may i suggest something though? maybe add a little white, grey, dark blue, something so the black stripes aren't pure black. right now...it kinda seems like there's holes in the tiger. this may be because it's not a very big picture but...just something i noticed. it does have a cool affect as it is right now though. anyway, great work and wonderful tutorial! keep it up!

that's good! yeah...i think i learned exactly how bad a scan can mess with your art today...i scanned something bright red and blue done in oil pastels and whew, it was a mess. i think it looks a little more true to form after a little photoshoping but...

anyway, hope it works out!
