Description Another watercolour painting in Art Nouveau style. I made this for my Oma. She wanted a "mysterious woman". Please leave me your thoughts on this one!

Those are some very pretty hairstyles. I may consider it in the future! I do have an OC with a hairstyle kind of like those so maybe I should draw her again.

Very nice watercolor! Certainly better than I've ever been able to do with watercolors. As a nit-pick, her right arm looks a little funky. I think you made the upper portion of the arm longer than the forearm. But, I especially like the shadows and the way the hair colors transition. The hair in general hasΒ  nice flow.

Thanks for your feedback!

I see what you mean about the arm. I used this photo as a referenceΒ www.instagram.com/p/BWnnorRAuu…

and I see the hand is not in the original photo. I think I wanted to draw the wrist so I tried to make it look like she was holding it closer to her body. But I am not the best at perspective so perhaps I should have followed the photo.Β

FEN-OSHI [2018-04-29 14:54:21 +0000 UTC]

This artwork does indeed capture the graceful curves of the Art Nouveau style with a good blend of impressionist techniques. I particularly like the role the striking red hair plays within the composition of the figure: dividing and fragmenting the form, to become more naturalistic then it would have otherwise been. The salience of the hair also allows me to look across the artwork in a more directed manner, emphasising the artwork's relationship with forms found in Art Nouveau's fascination with nature. However, most artworks of that particular style often featured an excessive amount of floral imagery. This contrasts with the solitary flower found within your painting, allowing it to become different yet still capturing the aesthetic of flowing lines and floral patterns that marked a departure from the sterile academic art styles of the 19th century. The background also is an interesting factor in your artwork, as it is very chaotic, reminiscent of the less-realist style of art nouveau; yet providing a decent juxtaposition to the pastel-like impressionist shading of the figure that dominates the artwork. However, imo, the black flower may be too dominant in the painting, potentially impeding the flow of the composition through its stark shade. But overall it is a solid piece of art.

Thank you for your comment. I see what you mean with the flowers. I thought about adding more in the background like the ones I had seen in references but I do not actually like drawing flowers so I decided against it. I also understand your point about the black lily. I was uncomfortable painting this flower since it is so dark, but I tried to capture the iridescence of the flower. Not too well I suppose. The only reason it is in there is because I made this painting for my Oma and black lilies are her favourite flowers and I wanted to incorporate that somehow. I'm not sure how I would have made it less dominating since it did not look good with few layers. Perhaps it is too big?Β
