Description I'm EXTREMELY bored and avoiding doing homework and I found this old sketch on my laptop. So I decided to do a Speedpaint!

I honestly don't know what the point of this is...somehow it reminds me of Bebe's father 0.o

sorry the anatomy is a little off, it was an old sketch and this is when I first started 6:4 style.

Made in Paint Tool Sai

There are different named "styles" for different canvas shapes? I just guesstimate what size I'll need based on how much I want to show in the individual scene and hope for the best, heh.

Regardless, I think the shape works effectively for the composition of this painting. The open space below the person's jaw creates an uneasy, stark, agoraphobic feeling, almost like the blood's that much messier because you can see how much of it there is and that it's falling, but you have no idea where it'll go. The color balance is also effective to the squeamish mood: there is not only little to no color apart from the red of blood, but the contrast is also fairly high, especially on the person's face as opposed to the grey background; overall the colors evoke film noir and even Nazi regalia (which I mean in a good way - it's supposed to be disturbing). The anatomy could obviously use work, as you said, but honestly most of the flaws aren't THAT noticeable (really just the curving nose bridge); slightly grotesque anatomy isn't that bad a thing when the mood of the piece is so, well, grotesque.

I would advise staying away from low-opacity, full-hardness circles of color for blood spatters unless you're trying to project blood getting onto the camera or something; there's also something slightly off about most of the blood droplets, although I can't quite put my finger on what. Too long of tails considering the low volume they take up? Who knows; I'd just suggest trying to find references (well, maybe not of someone literally coughing up blood - yeesh - but maybe of splattering water or paint or something).

Overall good work, and good job making the best of an old sketch you've come a long way from!

What do you mean by style for canvas shape? If you are referring to "6:4", that has nothing to do with it all! 6:4 is just the name I have given this style that I drew in, but it has nothing to do with canvas size or character proportion. I just called it that because those numbers frequently appear in my nightmares and in artwork. That is all.

Thanks for your feedback! I take no offense by what you said. The more grotesque feel it has to it, that is what I want!

I see what you mean about about opaque blood. I actually kinda like the look of it, but I would like to make more realistic-looking splatters but I don't know how to do that in SAI (I did in Photoshop because I had a brush for it). But hopefully I can ditch SAI and go back to Photoshop soon because I am more comfortable with it.

Thanks again! I appreciate it!

Oh, okay. It's cool that you have names for your individual styles; I pretty much have a cartoony style and a digital painting style and that's it.

Yeah, I'm not sure why everyone's so enamored with SAI. I've tried it and didn't find anything (granted, I wasn't using it for long) I couldn't do in Photoshop just as easily.

Thanks!

Ja, I don't care for it. I can't use it anymore either which sucks cause just as I was about to open commissions, the trial ended :/ But I think I will have to suck it up and just get Photoshop.

Well, you're definitely good at the painstaking facial features that i don't often do in my own work. its so very well textured that it kind of have 3D volume in it. I also see the tiny detail and tone in each strain of hair which is a mark of mastery in my book. so over all, great work, keep it up.

Hello~
ProjectComment memeber here; okay to start off-I am a big dark/macabre lover and immediately
when I looked at this the colours really caught my attention (for red, black, and grey/white are almost
the designated colours for the genre). So good choice on your end for choosing this colour scheme; I
like how you tried to add intensity by the subtle lines to make a movement, and it did work beautifully.
I also really can enjoy your detailing for the blood stains, dripping blood, the fine details in the hair and
ears, and even in the teeth (;3 yes I even noticed that). However this is where things go a tad off. I
cannot say for cerain if it is your style or not, btu the anatomy is quite off. From the nose bridge/upper
head being far too long, the nose tilting up in that way, and the chin/jaw being so short or small as well.
Because of that-the picture is a tad odd to look at-which at first I thought was intentional to make an
odd almost surreal image but it isn't surreal enough and it isn't realistic enough either so I assumed it
was a flaw. An easy one to fix however so do not worry about that~! In the future just look at some
refrences before making it a solid picture =3 I can see you have a nice eye for subtle details and
effects so-keep that in mind for tha fture and you will make some even more amazing pictures!

Thank you, I am glad that you like macabre. Very few do.

Hmm...it is sorta stylised I guess but the sketch itself was a couple of years old and I was too lazy to fix it and wanted to use it as colouring practice

but I do see what you mean, I realise that it's off, it is the development of a style, but yes it is off. I usually use references for this style but obviously not on this one.

Thanks again!

Hehe you are welcome, I am glad you see what
I meant-when I glanced at your other work I could see where some was
style and the rest was a slight mistake. It is alright though-I can tell you
probably won't make that mistake much in the future X3 and don't worry
we all get too lazy to fix simple stuff like that every now and again haha~

Looks creepy as fuck. Yes, proportions are off but it looks good to me (at least). Shading is good. The collor of blood is dark red, ok but
the light make this dark shade red colors a little bit brighter. You know more red than dark red. But i quess it is a zombie so it doesn't really matter.

aw what happened to him?with all that blood.
lighting that part near his mouth is really a great touch for an easy read of the focal point.

Can you tell me about this 6:4 style?

RaspberryTickle In reply to artistmyx [2016-03-01 07:18:50 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I don't know. It was an old sketch that I fleshed out XD

I'd love to tell you more about it!

It's a style of mine that is as close to realism as I can get. It is inspired a lot by the work of GENIK. ---->static.zerochan.net/Alice.(Ame…

Here are some old reference examples I did in the early stages of the style using various characters of mine. I try to make my style less anime-inspired though.
fav.me/d83ohyi

I am currently working on requests in this style so I can refine it. It is a really difficult style and one sketch may take up to an hour to complete.

I call it 6:4 due to a string of nightmares that I have, and the characters appeared in this style in the dream. The numbers 6 and 4 occur frequently in my nightmares and in my art. I don't have any references for the characters or concepts for the story here on DA because it is not complete.

Have you always done portraits? I noticed you use SAI and Photoshop. What do you do in each programme for your portraits?

ah.  thank you for telling me about it. so the 6:4 style is your own made style? that's great. when i looked at your others examples, What I can immediately notice are the eyes. I think it's a great style.

ahm, nope, mostly I do half bodies to whole bodies but lately I felt the need to work on my knowledge of portraits, that's why lately I am more attached to doing portraits(and kinda enjoyed the experience)
ah yah, I use SAI for almost all the drawing+painting process, while I use photoshop for tweaking certain facial features that I felt not right using liquify and for added effects.

You're welcome! Thanks for asking! I suppose it looks similar to other styles, but no one person draws things the exact same way. Thanks, I really do like the eyes myself!

I see! Will you work your way on up to full bodies then?

Oh cool, you seem very comfortable with SAI then. I do not like the programme much. I personally like Photoshop better but I am not able to use it currently .

yah, that syle is really unique. I too like how you did the eyes.

I will in time. there're things that I really need to draw first before going back to drawing/painting full bodies.

ah. I first worked with photoshop myself for a couple of years, I only did try SAI after a couple of months of being frustrated of using my bamboo tablet with photoshop. I still use photoshop a lot in my other jobs like doing programmes, editing photos and other stuff but when it comes to drawing and painting digitally, I really mostly use SAI.

WHy can't you use photoshop at the moment?

Thanks!

I got a new computer and the Photoshop I had was a student edition, and we used my grandma's old school district account, but she no longer has access that that email. And I tried to use a code I found online, but they caught onto my ways. Also I think the university network is blocking Abode, so I may have to try again at home to see if I can use it there, but I doubt that it will work
