Description
3 minute exposure of Orion (stars on the upper right part of the photo) on a cold winter night. I might be slow, but it amazed me how fast yet unnoticable the earth moves and spins. Without a camera I can stare at the stars for hours and never notice them change position, but during only a minute they will draw very noticable trails on film/ccd. Ain't that just fanfuckingtastic!?!?Related content

Very nice shot, the snowy foreground gives it a special atmosphere. Was it a full moon night?
And don't feel bad about the trails, they are unavoidable with such long exposure times - heck when I took my photo of Orion 2 days ago I used 30 seconds for the exposure and still I got what you could call the start of trails...

I find that almost mesmerizing!
The exposure is spot on, love the dark blue tones in the night sky.
Love the small bushes in the foreground too, standing there frozen not caring a bit about the galaxies passing by overhead. To me they really make this photograph, reminds me how small we are.
Top job, and a definite favourite.

Wow......like a bunch of little UFO's.....
but the sparkling snow and the dead branches emerging from the ground are much more noteworthy....what a great shot
this looks like a postcard I would see at a ski resort (thats a good thing)
good job

I like the way you have and have not alike used the rule of thirds. I love the contrast from the blue sky downwards to the snow, it gives it such appeal and freedom. The sparkles forming on the snow realy get me. How long was the shitter speed. I cant figure out what Shutter Speed: 1893/10 second is lol. Your lucky you got a Nikon D70. The Canon 300D on bulb setting you have to hold the stutter down lol, making most the image blury unless you have a tripod. Awsome shot.

Amazing shot...I've recently wanted to experiment with long exposure shots while out in a more rural area where the stars are visible like this. Beautifully captured with such a peaceful foreground to really bring home the calming nature of ... nature? Yes.

Ooooh, i haven't neen out in the night to watch the starf for a long time. It's tooooooo cold right now to do that, but now it's the best itme, cos there is almost no atmospheric interference. Orion, Normally it's above my house . . . but this year, at this time, it's not there, it's missplaced, like the earth have moved ont he other side of the galaxy

I think this photo is excellent, the serenity of the foreground is excellent, On the stars I think i would have either gone for no trails (shorter exposure) or more distinct trails (a much longer exposure) at the moment the trails feel kind of half hearted. but still an excellent photo that makes me wanna go out into the middle of nowhere and take some long exposures.

it is amazing how fast and slow the scenery is moving. i haven't tried the long exposures yet, but it is noticable when you try to use a non-tracking telescope. you can see whatever you're looking at creeping out of your field of vision. it is so slow that you can't actually see the object moving while you're looking at it. after it has moved a certain amount, you just notice that it is closer to edge of the eyepiece. probably a combination of the slow mvnt and that you are tracking it automatically. i wonder if you focussed on something stationary with a star in the same field of vision, you could see it move.
ugh, babble, babble, babble. great picture! very pretty.

Fantastic shot, just too bad about the small trails. The composition is great.
A good rule of thumb for shooting starts is to divide the 35mm equivalent of the lens by 600, I guess D70 has a 1.6 ratio so a 12 mm would be close to 19mm on a film camera? 600/19 ~= 30 seconds so that should be the longest exposure without creating trails.

I took the 12mm from the exif data, maybe that's not correct, but you get the point.
