I decided to build the "Bat Tank" as my latest fan art CAD creation. It is the "Batmobile" that is featured in Frank Miller's classic "The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel by DC comics. It bugged me that there weren't hardly any good clear images of this awesome design, so I decided to create a few cool images of it. I used every source available for reference, including the original comic book imagery, the animated DVD version of "The Dark Knight Returns," some artist sketches, and the excellent die cast toy by Eaglemoss. None of these sources are entirely consistent with eachother, and there really isn't any definitive set of blueprints that one can follow. Even the various hand-drawn views of this vehicle that appear in the original graphic novel don't exactly agree with one another. So this ended up being a pretty good amalgam/compromise of the various sources, along with some wiggle-room for my own interpretation. Anyhow, I just love this beast. While the graphic novel shows an older Batman driving the Bat Tank, they are pretty clear that it has been many years since he used it last. So I like to imagine a younger Batman at the wheel, driving this through the streets of Gotham, chasing bad guys. My current favorite interpretation of Batman is the way he appears in Arkham Origins. It's a very "tactical" looking Batman, (with visible buckles and straps.) I think this look would work well with this very "tactical" iteration of the Batmobile.
