No-one would really ask for money. It doesn't even seem to have any sort of influence as there are no real "official" businesses within Gensokyo except for whatever that thing was called that Marisa's parents or Kourin was doing. And a game like this would be way too complex to hack. Think about how long it would take to modify your moveset from firing NDL-width lasers every direction to firing Spark-width lasers every direction. You'd need the bullet type ID, you'd need the color hex if you cared, you'd need the base power value, and a few other things that just barely make it not worth it.
Back to the Touhou MMO idea in general, I do think it would be fun. There isn't really much to it that could be exploited. As I said, money doesn't really have much of an influence in-game. It seems to be more of, "I beat you up and then I take this thing." I mean people could just go train under the canon characters to get strong enough to beat other players up until they have everything, but given that this series is all about being strong, really, that would never happen.
An idea I think would be interesting is that the Touhou MMO could be the final game, just there's no preset story, instead ZUN plays as the "final boss" of each "story" (and when there's no story currently "happening", he just plays as himself or works on the next update, and when each new final boss is beaten, ZUN turns them into an NPC, as well as the player that beat the final boss)

In all seriousness, though, I don't really think a Touhou MMO would take the same path as "every mmo game [already] out there". I get it was a joke, mocking them, but it wouldn't occur much if at all in Touhou. There are some things that may need yen, of course, but probably only Reimu or Marisa would care (Marisa by selling things she collects/steals/makes and Reimu through shrine donations, obviously). In the case of Reimu, maybe you could get like a gift or experience boost or something from the Hakurei god if you donate, and the reward gets bigger for each consecutive day that you donate.
