Description An advertisement for RedBall Express, showing off one of their Connestoga class freighters, the MV RedBall Conveyer.

RedBall Express is a venerable Martian shipping company originally founded in the Zubrin colony in 2092 and later moving to Deimos Highport for tax purposes. RedBall Express was an integral arm of the nascent Martian Alliance's support of the Jovian League during the Manchuria-Jovian War (2107 - 2112), keeping Jovian trade alive against Manchurian interdiction by leasing Jovian ships and flying them under the Red Blue and Green flag of Mars. The company's captains and crews gained a reputation for fearlessness and reliability during the war that has stayed with the organization ever since.

RedBall Express was one of the first to make the jump to running a commercial interstellar line after Stardrive became available to the public in 2219, and won a crucial subsidized contract to provide logistics service to the United States' Terranova colony. RedBall Express expanded their fleet and was soon providing freight and limited passenger service to destinations with fifteen light-years of Sol (about a three Jump radius based on Stardrive capabilities of the era). When the Stargate to the Sagittarius Arm of the galaxy was opened up by the Sagittarius Development Corporation (SDC) in 2357, RedBall Express leveraged themselves heavily into colonial support charters, with close to half of their active starships in Sagittarius as well as a system-ship network in the most populous star system, HM+53 0102 (Fury). The sudden disaster of the Stargate crash in 2361 stranded RedBall assets in Sagittarius, cut off from their headquarters orbiting Mars. The company's Sagittarius branch VP has since become the head of the operation, and business continues under SDC subsidy until the economic and political situation of the Sagittarius colonies can stabilize.

The MV RedBall Conveyer was laid down in the Cis-Lunar L5 Graving Docks of Atlas Astronautics in 2350 as a Block IIb design with an Empyrean propulsion complex (3.5 TW maximum rated total jet power at 0.025G Cruise / 0.5G High Thrust) and upgraded SSTE Class IX Short Jump Stardrive. The RedBall Conveyer was one of the first starships granted a visa by the SDC to enter Sagittarius, and has remained within the spiral arm from 2357 to the present. Her original UN Registry number of RBE-350-077 has been scrapped under the new Armada of the Mercer Compact system being placed in effect since the Crash, taking on the registry of AMC-481. Her current Master is Antonin Sforza.

Modeled with SketchUp. Rendered with Kerkythea. Background image is a screenshot from Crowd Control Productions' MMO, EVE Online. The name RedBall Express is a nod to the original Red Ball Express logistics system used by the Western Allies during WWII.

A great tribute to the men of the Red Ball Express. Thanks for keeping their memory and valor alive.

It was my privilege! The story of the Red Ball Express is one that has long fascinated me.

sweet design.

curious, do the spin habitat sections face forward during acceleration?

Yes. You can see where the habitats are "forked?" The gap there is where the habitat rotates in around the spin arm. The now forward face of the habitat has a Whipple shield against dust strikes, with a modest B4C ceramic/carbon-fiber armor belt beneath that between the shield and the pressure hull.

What is Manchuria at that point?

Pretty much all of modern day China but Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Hunan, and Taiwan provinces. In this setting, the southern coastal provinces broke away from the PRC in a civil war in the mid 21st century following a severe economic downturn and a combination of tyrannical and inept policies from Beijing to correct it. What remained was taken over by former Communist Party hardline bureaucrats and corporate barons from Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces who were largely ethnic Manchu, and whose policies became discriminatory (in practice, not as "official" policy) to the Han.

Manchuria rose up from the ashes of the civil war, but was unable to reclaim the southern provinces. They were the first to have nationally sponsored colonies outside cis-lunar space, but were effectively a one-party fascist state forever trying to stamp out autonomy and rebellion among their people, which led to the Manchuria-Jovian War mentioned above when their colony of Kanghua on Europa declared their independence and joined the Jovian League. Unfortunately for the Jovians, the Manchurians won the war and reclaimed their colony. Unfortunately for Manchuria, their victory created the Western Alliance, and checked their absolute domination of Jupiter space.

When Stardrive was invented, they begged, borrowed, or stole the technology and reverse engineered it, becoming one of the great interstellar powers of the setting.

Out of the Kerkythea group, I think this is probably the best looking space ship made. There is so much detail to look at, and I am impressed with your modelling skill. I'd like to know what render settings did you use?

Reactor-Axe-Man In reply to LanceII [2011-07-17 16:54:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

These are my render settings:
AA Method: Production AA
AA Threshold: 0.05
Fuzzy Tracing: Higher
Soft Shadows: Higher
Max Scatter Bounces: 5 (default)
Max Dirac Bounces: 5 (default)
Brightness Threshold: 0.001 (default)
Global Illumination Method: Photon Mapping + Final Gathering (SW)
Photons: 250,000
Shooting Depth: 6 (default)
Caustics: None (default)
Rays: 900
Accuracy: 0.05
Gathering Depth: 1 (default)
Tracing Depth: 5 (default)
Transparencies, Reflections, and Refractions: On

I used specularity and bump maps for nearly all the materials, in some cases just using the defuse maps in these modes, and for the hull materials a custom map with fresnel specularity settings at 40 to 48. All illumination sources other than the sun are self-illuminating materials. The shiny stuff like the propellant tanks and the radiator panels uses cosine specularity settings at 200. Most bump maps have a strength of 1, though the hull materials are 0.5. The navigation light domes used the default Thin Glass shader.

Thanks! My next project for this class is a nod to BSG with a Colonial Movers variant equipped with cargo drop pods.
