I think the hardest thing I’ve ever done was telling Castiel that he couldn’t become a guardian angel. I’d just gotten the news, and as a big brother and the primo messenger angel, it was my job to tell him. When he heard he was going to be working with Zachariah instead of down on Earth, the kid just broke. (Not that I blame him. Old Zach is kind of a prick.)

So angels are supposed to accept their tasks with grace and dignity—not as snot-nosed, sobbing wrecks.

But Luci let him.

He stood guard, even, a wing wrapped around us as he stood watch over little Cas crying his eyes out.

His tears could have been raining out a hurricane for all we knew, pouring out trouble and little gray fish all over the Earth below— But we let him.

I think that’s why he tries as hard as he does now, to prove he’s good enough— that he still have a chance. It really breaks my heart.
