Mass is a deadmate, but unlike many deadmates he doesn't look like a walking corpse. In fact, it is not obligatory for them to look like a corpse, but since usually the error happens to them at the moment of death and/or respawn, many retain their mortal injuries in one form or another, which gave their faction such a name.
Each deadmate has his unique Talent, but for Mass it was long believed that either its effect was too insignificant or it was activated under such rare circumstances that it wouldn't count anyway. Of course, in his presence, the lighting began to behave strangely - namely, disappear, as if Mass was absorbing all the available light - but who cares.
In reality, Mass's Talent is much more entertaining. Since the body and the consciousness have different ways of saving, only his consciousness remained intact, while almost nothing remained of the body. With his consciousness, he can point where his body is and what qualities it has. He can walk through walls, walk on the air, he can materialize or dematerialize at will, he can carry an infinite number of objects with him, he can make himself appear at any area in available space, he can even apply this to the environment - if he wants to grab an object lying a few miles away, it will immediately appear in his hand. All this reveals endless possibilities of manipulating anything in the world to his liking... well, it would have, if Mass knew how to use it.
He does not know how, and does not even really know what is in his power and what is not. Most of the time he's a regular demo and has all the qualities of a regular demo, apart from a slightly inadequate appearance. One day, trying to learn how to walk through walls, he fell into the ground several times, got stuck and was so impressed that he decided not to play with such dangers anymore.
But this does not exclude accidents. If he does not know how reality should work with him, his consciousness does not indicate this and reality fails at processing him. When he doesn't expect being shot, bullets go through him. When he doesn't notice an obstacle on the way, he can accidentally go through it or "forget" to fall into a pit. Or, like here, he may be unknowingly noclipping, so that the hand goes through him like through thin air, but the very second he realizes what is happening, the part of the hand that is unlucky enough to be inside the area of his body will be crushed. He cannot release it at his will. Mass doesn't know how.
